In Upside-Down Move, NBCUniversal Mulls Launch Of Cable Channel That Would Carry Peacock Sports Content

After closing NBC Sports Network in 2021, NBCUniversal is now contemplating the introduction of a new sports-centric cable channel, which would feature content currently available on its streaming platform, Peacock.

This potential launch, still under discussion and not yet confirmed, comes at a pivotal moment for the TV industry, which is increasingly revolving around sports content, according to a source familiar with the matter speaking to Deadline.

The Wall Street Journal initially reported these talks, suggesting the channel could debut as early as this fall. This timing aligns well with NBCUniversal’s upcoming 11-year broadcasting agreement with the NBA, which includes plans to broadcast some games on Peacock. The streaming service has made significant sports inroads but has also faced criticism for securing exclusive rights to major sports events like NFL games, Premier League matches, and the Olympics. Additionally, Peacock has recently increased its monthly subscription fee by $3, making it the priciest ad-supported platform at $10.99.

As more consumers cut the cable cord, traditional TV bundles are losing ground, prompting companies like ESPN and Fox to introduce subscription-based streaming services ahead of the 2025 football season. NBCUniversal’s strategy to launch a cable channel seems to counter this trend but recognizes the reality that the surge in streaming options and the entry of unconventional players like Roku, Netflix, and YouTube as rights holders has led to considerable viewer confusion.

With this new channel, NBCUniversal aims to simplify how viewers can access games, whether they subscribe to traditional cable TV or opt for direct-to-consumer streaming options. Moreover, NBCUniversal and other network programmers are restructuring their cable segments, with Comcast spinning off Versant—a separate entity for NBCU’s cable assets excluding Bravo. Similarly, Warner Bros. Discovery and A+E Global Media are making strategic shifts, with the latter exploring the sale of its portfolio, which does not include sports.

It remains unclear which pay-TV packages will offer the new sports channel, as The Wall Street Journal noted. Sports channels often come with higher fees, adding to the complexity for consumers.

While exclusive streaming deals for sports are still uncommon, YouTube is set to broadcast its first NFL game this fall. Even landmark agreements like Apple’s partnership with Major League Soccer, which delivers MLS games via Apple TV+, include traditional broadcasting elements, such as a concurrent linear agreement with Fox.
