During a lavish ceremony at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., in December, the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw was announced, revealing that the United States would face Paraguay in Los Angeles for the tournament’s opener.
The World Cup commenced on June 11 in Mexico City, where Mexico triumphed over South Africa in a Group A encounter. The following day, the U.S. showcased their prowess with a 4-1 win against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. This victory set the stage for the U.S. team’s successful run, eventually leading them to beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 on July 1, progressing to the round of 32. Their next challenge was a July 6 match against Belgium in the round of 16.

The grand finale of the World Cup will take place on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The U.S., along with Canada and Mexico, is hosting this unprecedented 48-team tournament, which will feature a total of 104 matches over 39 days in 16 cities spread throughout the three countries.
Television Coverage
Fox and Telemundo have secured the broadcasting rights in the U.S., with Fox Sports airing a record 340 hours of original programming. This includes an unprecedented 70 matches broadcast on the Fox network. All matches will be shown live on either Fox or FS1, with 40 featured in primetime. Additionally, every game will be available for streaming live and on-demand on Fox One and the Fox Sports App.

Starting with the Round of 16 on the Fourth of July, every match until the tournament concludes will be broadcast on Fox.
Telemundo will provide Spanish-language coverage of all 104 matches live, with 92 airing on Telemundo and 12 on Universo. All matches will also be streamed live on Peacock (for Premium and Premium Plus subscribers) and the Telemundo app.
On Fox, the FIFA World Cup Live daily pregame show will alternate between Fox and FS1 throughout the tournament. This will be complemented by FIFA World Cup Today, which offers pre- and post-match analysis. Each day’s coverage will wrap up with FIFA World Cup on Fox After Hours with James Corden, hosted by the former Late Late Show star, airing most nights.
Additionally, Fox Corp’s sibling ad-supported streamer Tubi will broadcast live in 4K for free the World Cup’s opening ceremonies, as well as the matches between Mexico-South Africa and U.S.-Paraguay.

The Teams
The U.S. found itself in a favorable group in the December draw; in addition to defeating Paraguay, it overcame Australia on June 19 in Seattle and, after clinching the group title, lost to Türkiye on June 25 in L.A.
Other notable group stage matches included England vs. Croatia in Group L, France vs. Senegal in Group I, and defending champions Argentina starting against Algeria in Group J. Spain, ranked No. 1 in the FIFA standings, faced off against Cape Verde, a debutant from the tiny African archipelago, in the world’s most popular sports tournament.

The whole ceremony was embarrassingly bad. It just went on and on and on. We don’t want to listen to a bunch of has-been artists. We want to see the World Cup draw.
