UEFA Rips FIFA’s Decision To Suspend USMNT’s Folarin Balogun Red Card As “Unprecedented, Incomprehensible And Unjustifiable”

The governing body for European soccer, UEFA, has recently spoken out against FIFA’s decision to annul the red card issued to American soccer star Folarin Balogun.

UEFA expressed severe criticism on its website, stating that FIFA had “crossed a red line” by overturning the decision, calling it “unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable.” The full statement is available below.

Balogun was initially given a straight red card during a World Cup knockout game between the U.S. and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Interestingly, following what has been reported as lobbying from the White House, FIFA made the rare decision during a major tournament to defer Balogun’s suspension for a year, allowing him to play in the upcoming match against Belgium.

This decision has sparked widespread media coverage and drawn criticism from various football circles. Belgium is considering legal action, and several top managers, including Thomas Tuchel from England and Norway’s Stale Solbakken, have openly criticized the move.

Reports from AP and other outlets have suggested a direct involvement of the White House in this controversial decision, highlighting President Trump’s close relationship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who previously honored Trump with FIFA’s inaugural Peace Prize.

The UEFA statement in full:

“Yesterday’s decision to suspend for a probationary period of a year the implementation of the one-match automatic suspension following the red card issued to the player Folarin Balogun crossed a red line.

“Football, like any other sport, relies on clear rules that ensure fair, honest, and transparent competition. While some rules might allow for interpretation, this is not one of those cases. The automatic minimum suspension of one match following a red card is a non-negotiable rule that doesn’t require any decision from a competent body to be applied. It is a standard embedded in our regulations that should not be subject to exceptions, especially not in the midst of a tournament where other players in similar situations have served their suspensions.

“When the certainty of rules is compromised by those charged with upholding them, the sport’s integrity and the credibility of its competitions are jeopardized. Moreover, this decision sets a precedent in the ongoing tournament, necessitating equal treatment in similar future instances, which could undermine the competition.

“Football’s global appeal lies in its beautiful simplicity and universal standards. A tournament, especially one as significant as the World Cup, influences the game globally, carrying potential positive or negative impacts.

“We are astonished by such an unprecedented, incomprehensible, and unjustifiable decision.”
