BREAKING: The highly anticipated BBC detective series The Northumbria Mysteries, featuring Robson Green, is set to reach global audiences as Banijay secures the international distribution rights.
Filmed against the picturesque backdrop of the Northumberland coast and its quaint market towns, the series introduces an unusual pair of crime solvers. Led by Grantchester actor Robson Green, who plays Joe Ruby, a man whose life is marked by past errors and lost chances. Ruby teams up with the composed and Oxford-educated detective Rose O’Connell. Together, they tackle complex crime puzzles, often surprising each other with their distinct approaches in a classic mismatched partnership. Details about who will play O’Connell remain undisclosed.
Lonesome Pine Productions, based in the North East of England, is producing the series which has commenced production. The show is being made for BBC One and its streaming service, iPlayer.

Banijay Rights, the distributor, has added the series to its drama portfolio. “The Northumbria Mysteries combines a rich, atmospheric setting with gripping narratives, set against the dramatic scenery of North East England,” commented Simon Cox, EVP Content & Acquisitions at Banijay Rights. He added, “This series is a key addition to our expanding drama catalog and demonstrates our commitment to delivering high-caliber, engaging dramas to a global audience.”
The BBC has greenlit the show as part of its commitment to increase production in the North East region.
For Banijay, acquiring worldwide rights to this series adds a celebrity-led, light-hearted crime drama to their offerings, a genre currently popular globally. Just a day ago, another adaptation of the French cozy crime series High Potential was announced. Other similar genre shows like Midsomer Murders and Death In Paradise continue to perform well internationally.
With The Northumbria Mysteries, Banijay Rights enhances its scripted show portfolio, which already includes hits like Peaky Blinders, Black Mirror, Rogue Heroes, and the reboot of the 80s hit Bergerac.
