‘FBI’ Spinoff With CIA Twist In Works At CBS

A new television series merging the realms of the FBI and CIA is in the works, courtesy of Dick Wolf, a titan in the arena of crime dramas. The proposed series, titled FBI: CIA, is a spinoff from Wolf’s successful CBS series FBI, and it’s eyeing a slot in the 2025-2026 television season.

The series, penned by Wolf alongside FBI: Most Wanted showrunner David Hudgins, Nicole Perlman of Pokémon: Detective Pikachu and Captain Marvel fame, and ex-CIA officer David Chasteen, will make its debut in an episode of FBI later this current season.

The storyline features a no-nonsense FBI agent teamed up with a savvy CIA agent within a newly formed covert taskforce. Their mission? To tackle and thwart domestic terrorism threats within New York City.

Three characters, including the leading FBI and CIA agents, will be introduced in this special episode. Should the series get the green light, these characters will continue as regulars. Casting for these key roles is presently taking place.

Watch on Deadline

Executive production for FBI: CIA is handled by Wolf, Hudgins, Perlman, Chasteen, and Peter Jankowski from Wolf Entertainment. The show, like its predecessors in the FBI franchise, would be produced under the banners of Universal Television and CBS Studios.

Set in New York, FBI: CIA shares its universe with FBI and FBI: Most Wanted, setting the stage for potential crossover episodes—a staple in Wolf’s productions. Although it shares a city with Wolf Entertainment’s Law & Order series, its different network affiliations could complicate crossover opportunities.

The future of FBI: CIA and its impact on FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International remains to be seen. Last spring, CBS extended FBI for three more seasons, up to 2026-27, while the other two series received single-season renewals expiring in May.

With CBS’s primetime slots tightly packed, accommodating four FBI series next season could require scheduling shifts, potentially moving at least one series to a different night. Currently, FBI, FBI: Most Wanted, and FBI: International dominate CBS’s FBI-themed evenings, drawing in substantial viewership.

CBS is doubling down on its franchise strategy next season, exploring additional spinoffs from the drama The Equalizer and the comedy The Neighborhood. They are also preparing a Fire Country spinoff, Sheriff Country, set to premiere in the 2025-26 season.

By blending the names of two iconic agencies, the title FBI: CIA might evoke humorous takes, reminiscent of Adult Swim’s satirical crime show NTSF:SD:SUV::.
