WARNING: This article contains spoilers from the final episode of And Just Like That on HBO Max.
On August 14, Carrie Bradshaw’s latest adventures in the metropolis concluded, with Sarah Jessica Parker’s character embracing her single status and the independence of living alone in a spacious brownstone.
The finale also wrapped up storylines for Carrie’s close friends. Notably, Cynthia Nixon’s Miranda faced a messy situation (quite literally) as she grappled with the news of her son Brady’s impending fatherhood.
Michael Patrick King, co-creator of the series, shares insights on the show’s final season, the reasons behind Miranda’s dirty dilemma, and discusses the possibility of a new film featuring Carrie and her friends.

DEADLINE: Did the series conclude as you hoped?
MICHAEL PATRICK KING: Absolutely. The narrative itself signaled it was time to end during the writing process. A pivotal line, the woman realized she wasn’t alone; she was independent, emerged organically. It was crucial for that to resonate with me because it calls back to Carrie’s journey in Sex and the City, affirming the most important relationship is with oneself. This echoes her evolution and provides a fresh perspective on self-sufficiency, which is a vital message for our audience, regardless of their relationship status.
DEADLINE: What about the other characters?
Each character reached a satisfying conclusion. Miranda and Joy are together, enduring life’s messes. Harry and Charlotte reconnect physically, which is crucial as their bond remains strong. Rock, their nonbinary child, declares openness to change throughout their life. Seema expresses a new outlook on relationships, and Lisa reaffirms her commitment to Herbert, showcasing emotional growth. These endings felt genuine, prompting me to propose that we conclude Carrie’s story here, to which Sarah Jessica Parker agreed, supported by HBO Max’s appreciation for how we rounded out these arcs.
DEADLINE: How has the response to this season been for you?
MPK: I often joke, what if you threw a party and nobody came? Everyone involved wants their hard work to resonate. While the show became a topic of intense media discussion, it also maintained a dedicated viewership that appreciated our portrayal of these characters’ evolution from their mid-thirties to nearly sixty. The feedback, both positive and critical, shows that our work provoked thought and engagement, which is exactly what we aim for.
DEADLINE: The incident with Miranda and the toilet – why include that, and what did you use for the effect?
MPK: We used silicone for the effect, and thankfully, it was perfect on the first take. The show has always addressed the messier aspects of relationships, symbolized here by literal excrement. This incident emphasizes the inevitable challenges and the need to address them, maintaining our balance of high fashion and humor within the storyline.
DEADLINE: Carrie’s conversation with Seema at the wedding dress show was impactful. Could you expand on that?
MPK: That scene was pivotal. When Seema questions the value of marriage, Carrie reflects on being chosen, highlighting her personal growth from seeking validation to choosing independence. This moment ties back to her earlier self while showcasing her maturity, offering a nuanced critique of marriage’s role in society.
DEADLINE: And Lisa’s documentary narration by Michelle Obama – is that what you envisioned?
MPK: Yes, it’s a bit of wishful thinking, but why not? I imagine the documentary’s significance would genuinely pique Michelle Obama’s interest. And as for Miranda, despite earlier setbacks, she’s determined to mend fences and support Joy through her family issues.
DEADLINE: Finally, is an And Just Like That movie on the horizon?
MPK: We’ve concluded this chapter with a definitive close. The narrative felt alive and relevant, sparking discussions that have kept the spirit of the original series vibrant. We’ve said what needed to be said, capturing the essence of these characters at this point in their lives.
