CAUTION: This article reveals key plot points from the entire series of We Were Liars, including the final episode.
E. Lockhart’s popular YA novel We Were Liars has been transformed into a television series, thanks to efforts by Julie Plec, Carina Adly MacKenzie, the original author, and an exceptional cast.
Released on Prime Video on June 18, the show spans eight episodes and introduces viewers to the enigmatic world of Beechwood Island, the summer retreat for the prestigious Sinclair family. The family, under the leadership of Harris Sinclair (David Morse), is surrounded by secrets hidden behind their grand outward appearance.

Following the success of the initial novel, released on May 13, 2014, Lockhart wrote a prequel centered on the three Sinclair sisters, whose children are the protagonists of We Were Liars. This prequel, titled Family of Liars, was published on May 3, 2022, and its narratives intertwine with those of the TV show, bringing fresh elements to the series’ first season.
Below is a detailed list of adaptations and changes made for the We Were Liars TV series compared to the book:
-
The Timeline
Image Credit: Prime Video The series condenses the timeline, portraying Summer 15 as the pivotal summer when Cadence is found on the beach with no memories and scant clothing. The original book describes a more extended timeline where Cadence travels to Europe with her father during Summer 16, not returning to Beechwood Island until Summer 17 to piece together her lost memories. The series omits the European trip, instead focusing directly on the events of Summer 16 and 17.

The Party Boat
Image Credit: Prime Video In an early episode, Harris is perturbed by a noisy party boat near Beechwood’s shores. In the series, Johnny Sinclair Dennis (Joseph Zada) sees this as a challenge and eventually secures access for himself and his friends. This introduces new dynamics among the characters, especially between Emily Alyn Lind’s Cadence and Shubham Maheshwari’s Gat, adding depth not present in the first-person narrative of the book.
-
Johnny’s Sexuality
Image Credit: Prime Video The series includes a poignant moment where Johnny opens up about his sexual identity struggles, a theme not explored in the book. This adds layers to his character and provides a more in-depth look into his personal life, which is less detailed in the novel due to its narrative perspective.
-
Rosemary Sinclair
Image Credit: Prime Video The series gives more prominence to Rosemary, the fourth Sinclair sister, who is only briefly mentioned in the prequel Family of Liars. Her presence looms over her sisters Carrie (Mamie Gummer), Penny (Caitlin FitzGerald), and Bess (Candice King), hinting at deeper family secrets.
-
The Fourth of July Party
Image Credit: Prime Video The series introduces a Fourth of July party that does not occur in the book. This event adds a new layer of interaction between Cadence and Gat’s girlfriend Raquel, contrasting with the novel where Cadence misconstrues a letter from Gat to Raquel as being for her.
-
Mirren’s Romance with Ebon
Image Credit: Prime Video In the series, Mirren develops a romantic relationship with “boat boy” Ebon (Dempsey Bryk), diverging from her book relationship with high school senior Drake Loggerhead, who never physically appears in the story.
-
The Lemon Hunt
Image Credit: Prime Video The extravagant lemon scavenger hunt from Family of Liars is depicted in Episode 6 of the series. This event was one of Tipper’s favorite traditions, involving over 100 lemons hidden around Beechwood Island, with a lime as the special find. Winners could be those who find the lime or collect the most lemons, each receiving different prizes.
-
Johnny’s Dark Secret
In the series, Johnny harbors a dark secret revealed when tennis players confront him about his violent past, a detail not present in the book, adding complexity to his character.
-
Harris’s Fall

Carrie’s Vision of Johnny

-
Cadence Going Back for the Black Pearls
