Mike Flanagan On Why He Broke His “No Sequels” Or Remakes Rule For ‘Carrie’ Series

Over half a century since Stephen King’s debut novel hit the shelves, Mike Flanagan is shaking things up with a fresh adaptation of Carrie.

The eight-part Amazon series recently completed filming in October. Flanagan shared why he decided to move away from his usual stance against sequels or remakes, especially for a book like Carrie which has inspired four films and a musical.

Flanagan revealed to Empire Magazine, “I stumbled upon a novel approach that seemed very relevant and innovative.”

Flanagan expressed, “I’ve always been drawn to projects that venture into uncharted territory. I used to insist on ‘No sequels.’”

This changed when he encountered King’s 2013 book Doctor Sleep, the follow-up to The Shining from 1977. “That really challenged my views,” he commented about his decision to adapt it into a 2019 film.

“The compelling aspect of The Shining was its focus on alcoholism, and then Steve presented this sequel centered on recovery. It felt like we were painting the other side of the same coin, completing the narrative,” Flanagan explained.

The new take on Carrie reimagines the life of Carrie White, an awkward teenager dealing with the sudden death of her father, her overbearing mother, high school dynamics, a bullying incident, and the discovery of her telekinetic abilities.

After Deadline exclusively revealed Flanagan’s project in October 2024, he cast Summer Howell as Carrie. The series also features Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle, Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, Josie Totah as Tina, and Joel Oulette as Tommy, with Arthur Conti as Billy. Additional cast includes Kate Siegel, Michael Trucco, Katee Sackhoff, Rahul Kohli, Crystal Balint, Danielle Klaudt, and Heather Graham.

His projects always begin promisingly then concludes with disappointment- perhaps stretching out thin stories is to blame.

This to be just kind of strengthens my thought that some of the actors without character names are playing older versions. Carrie Lives?
