BBC To Cancel Shows & “Review” TV Networks As It Cuts Content Spend By $107M

The newly appointed chief of the BBC has unveiled a strategy to cut the commissioning budget for its television, radio, and news sectors by £80 million ($107 million) over the next two years.

Matt Brittin, who previously held a senior position at Google, communicated to the employees via email on Wednesday (see full text below) that this cost-reduction initiative would involve discontinuing certain programs and reassessing the corporation’s array of TV channels and radio stations as consumer habits shift towards online platforms.

“Implementing these cost savings will necessitate difficult decisions and meticulous planning, and will not be completed immediately. We are dedicated to updating you promptly as we finalize plans in your particular areas. Significant savings will be required from all divisions,” he asserted.

While Brittin did not delve into specifics, he mentioned that further details would be disclosed shortly. These measures are part of broader efforts by the BBC to reduce overall expenses by £500 million ($670 million) over the next three years, building upon a previously established goal of £1.5 billion.

An estimated 1,800 to 2,000 positions at the British broadcasting giant will be eliminated in the near future, adding to a prevailing mood of uncertainty among staff.

Approximately 550 jobs in the BBC’s news and regional divisions will be cut, contributing to £160 million in savings, according to Brittin. Additionally, 700 positions will be phased out within the corporation’s administrative sectors.

“With reductions at this scale, some involuntary redundancies are inevitable, although we will strive to avoid them as much as possible. Several divisions have already started offering voluntary redundancy; more will begin today,” he explained.

“These are exceptionally uncertain times. Our audiences depend on us daily for news, entertainment, and insights to help make sense of the world. Balancing cost-cutting with our mission doubles the challenge for all of us,” he added.

At the heart of these reductions is a discrepancy in funding: although 94% of the UK population engages with the BBC each month, less than 80% contribute to the £180 annual licensing fee. The BBC is seeking to address this shortfall during its negotiations with the government concerning a new royal charter, which serves as the organization’s operational framework for the years ahead.

The BBC maintains eight national TV channels, and there has been ongoing speculation about consolidating its portfolio by merging channels such as BBC2 and BBC4. Additionally, the BBC reinstated its youth-focused BBC3 in 2022 after initially shutting it down, though its success remains under review.

Hello everyone,

It’s almost a month since I took on my role here, and I’ve been spending time getting to know many of you and the workings of the BBC. I’ve heard your commitment to our mission and your desire to modernize our operations – both are priorities I am actively addressing and will share more about in September. Naturally, you’re also concerned about what these budget cuts mean for you. It’s crucial to me that you are clear on this as soon as possible.

The scope of these savings demands difficult decisions and thorough planning, and won’t be completed overnight. We are committed to keeping you informed as soon as plans for your area are ready. All divisions are tasked with making substantial cuts. Today, some divisions are prepared to announce the initial phase of these plans, with more details to come.

We have initial updates from News, Nations, and Content. By the end of this fiscal year, these areas will have achieved £160 million in cost reductions, including both staff and non-staff expenses, resulting in a net decrease of approximately 550 positions. This is part of the 1,800–2,000 job reductions planned over the next three years.

Further savings will be detailed in the coming months across all divisions. This includes corporate areas where efforts are already underway – we anticipate approximately 700 positions will be eliminated in these sectors.

Reductions of this magnitude unavoidably mean some mandatory redundancies, though we will do everything possible to minimize them. Many divisions have already begun voluntary redundancy schemes; more will start today.

We will also need to discontinue some programs. These are tough choices, and we will adhere to three guiding principles:

Preserve content with the highest audience value and impact.
Adapt to where our audiences are, reducing expenditures elsewhere. For instance, we will cut commissioning spend across Content, News, and Nations by about £80 million in 2027–28 and reevaluate our broadcast TV channels and radio network lineup as audiences increasingly move online.

Simplify and accelerate the BBC – we must eliminate redundancies, clarify responsibilities, and enhance decision-making speed. This includes reducing senior leadership by at least 10%.

The News, Nations, and Content divisions will provide more details in calls and updates in the coming days. For other divisions, leaders will inform you of the latest progress on the required savings, the opening of voluntary redundancy schemes, and when further information will be available.

In addition to discussions with your teams, I will host a session for all staff on Tuesday, June 23, at 2pm BST, where I, along with Kate Phillips, Rhuanedd Richards, and Jonathan Munro, will answer your questions. Please join us if you can.

These are indeed uncertain times. Our audiences rely on us daily to stay informed, entertained, and prepared to understand the world. Achieving savings while fulfilling our mission means a particularly tough period for all involved. Please talk to your leaders and utilize the support available. In the meantime, thank you for all that you are doing.
