New Addition to NBC’s Cheerleading Comedy Pilot
EXCLUSIVE: Acclaimed Tony and Emmy award-winner Kristin Chenoweth has been cast in the upcoming NBC single-camera comedy pilot, Stumble, created by Jeff Astrof and Liz Astrof. Set to appear in a recurring role if the pilot is picked up for a full series, she will star alongside Jenn Lyon, Taran Killam, and other notable cast members including Jarrett Austin Brown, Georgie Murphy, Ryan Pinkston, Anissa Borrego, Arianna Davis, and Taylor Dunbar.
About the Show
Stumble, penned by the Astrof duo, is styled as a mockumentary that delves into the fiercely competitive realm of junior college cheerleading. The plot focuses on Courteney Potter, portrayed by Jenn Lyon, who is a celebrated junior college cheer coach. Her career takes a dramatic turn due to a scandalous video, leading to her dismissal and consequent hire at an obscure academic institution.
Chenoweth’s Character Details
In the series, Kristin Chenoweth will portray Tammy Istiny, a name that humorously gets mistaken for “Is Tiny”—a playful nod to Chenoweth’s petite stature. Tammy, who was once a prominent flyer and now serves as Courteney’s assistant coach, is depicted as stuck in her glory days of 1989. She is characterized by her outdated cheerleader makeup, high ponytail, and a constant accompaniment of a Cherry Coke slushie. Following Courteney’s exit, Tammy steps up, albeit reluctantly, to assume the role of head coach.
Production Team
The pilot of Stumble is bolstered by an experienced production team. Liz and Jeff Astrof serve as executive producers along with well-known cheerleading coach Monica Aldama, who gained fame from the Netflix series Cheer, and producer Dana Honor through Defining Eve Productions. The pilot episode is directed and executive produced by Jeff Blitz. Production is handled by Universal Television, part of the Universal Studio Group.
Chenoweth’s Recent and Upcoming Projects
Kristin Chenoweth, a five-time Emmy nominee and winner for her role in Pushing Daisies, and a Tony winner for You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, continues to expand her impressive career. Currently, she is developing a musical inspired by the 2012 documentary The Queen of Versailles and the life of Jacqueline “Jackie” Siegel. Chenoweth not only stars in but also produces the musical, collaborating again with Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz. The musical premiered last year in Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre and is set to debut on Broadway in the 2025-26 season.
Additionally, Chenoweth was featured in the Netflix holiday film Our Little Secret and performed “Live Like That,” the closing song in the animated movie The King of Kings. Her representation includes UTA, JTMC Entertainment, and Schreck Rose Dapello Adams.
