Jon Stewart Excoriates National “Pastime” Of Trying To Fit Mass Shooters Into A “Left-Right Paradigm”

On tonight’s edition of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart sharply criticized the prevalent “left-right blame game” that ensues after mass shootings in the nation.

Kicking off the show, the satirist also touched on President Donald Trump’s decision to send military forces to Portland, a move that has led Oregon to file a lawsuit against his administration.

“Was there some secret invasion of Portland by Vancouver that I missed? A fierce showdown between laid-back crafters, perhaps? ‘Hold your fire until you can see the whites of their artisanal coffee foam,'” Stewart quipped, before remarking that Trump “deploys the National Guard like some of us might impulsively buy a ShamWow off a late-night infomercial. ‘It’s on TV! I saw it on TV!’”

Discussing the six mass shootings that occurred over the weekend, raising the year’s total to 324, including an incident at a church in Grand Blanc, Michigan, that resulted in four deaths and eight injuries, Stewart highlighted how deep-seated partisanship has become so ingrained that people skip even the basic expressions of condolences.

“We used to follow a routine: shock, sadness, thoughts and prayers, a brief debate about the appropriateness of discussing gun control, followed by total inaction until the next tragedy,” he explained. “But now, our polarized politics has replaced even this cycle of inaction with a new, grim game: pinning blame based on whether the shooter ‘belongs’ to the left or the right.”

Continuing his critique of the flawed binary political system, especially given the rise of niche online groups and the trivialization of politics into internet memes, Stewart expressed frustration: “Who the hell cares? These mass shootings aren’t neatly categorized into our left-right divides. They’re likely driven by a complex mix of mental health issues, access to firearms, a desire for notoriety, and a dark digital underworld that fuels these tragic events.”

Later in the show, he lamented the loss of simpler times online: “Can we just go back to doing the cinnamon challenge?”
