Jon Stewart expressed utter disbelief that the Democrats yielded during the longest government shutdown to date, which concluded today with a temporary funding bill passed by Congress, with support from eight Democratic senators siding with Republicans.
On Monday’s episode of The Daily Show, Stewart repeatedly exclaimed in astonishment, using “I can’t fucking believe it” as a mock sponsor for the night’s show, suggesting that the usual expressions of disbelief were insufficient to capture his reaction.
Stewart criticized the Democrats for surrendering on the shutdown barely a week after achieving significant electoral victories.

The 42-day deadlock ended as Democrats conceded to revisit healthcare subsidy extensions under the Affordable Care Act at a later date, a decision Stewart lambasted due to the lack of solid commitments from House Speaker Mike Johnson or President Donald Trump.
Stewart also touched on the recent box office flop starring Sydney Sweeney, noting the irony of her MAGA supporters not turning out for a film about a lesbian boxer overcoming adversity, sarcastically questioning who could have predicted such an outcome.
He continued his critique, mockingly asking where in The Art of War it suggests that one should forfeit their advantage, dramatizing his disbelief by citing the text as advising against taking assertive action.
Stewart singled out Senators Tim Kaine and Jeanne Shaheen, who had initially supported the shutdown, only to reverse their stance, speculating whether their decisions were influenced by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s behind-the-scenes efforts to appease Republicans while ostensibly protecting vulnerable Democrats.
Drawing an analogy to sports, Stewart compared the Democrats’ political strategy to the New York Giants’ recent unexpected loss, describing it as a major fumble akin to losing a game in the final minutes despite a strong lead.
The comedian also criticized the Democrats for lacking conviction, humorously questioning how they could be the only elderly leaders unwilling to stubbornly hold onto their positions, unlike typical elderly behavior.
Stewart concluded that the shutdown highlighted the Trump administration’s disconnection from the public, accusing the Democrats of wasting their leverage, dampening their supporters’ enthusiasm, and ultimately turning a potential victory into a defeat.
He lamented the quality of leadership on the Democratic side, hinting at a sense of resignation, before showing a clip about the firing of Giants’ head coach Brian Daboll.
