Prime Video is set to produce a documentary series on Gary Lineker, the famed soccer player who transitioned into a media figure.
The series, titled Lineker, will be divided into four parts and will cover his extensive 50-year career. Recently, he has ventured into media entrepreneurship with his podcasting company Goalhanger. The series will also delve into his evolution from a beloved sports figure to a contentious public personality in today’s UK.
Lineker, once the top scorer for England, is celebrated as a national treasure and later became a prominent sports broadcaster, leading BBC’s Match of the Day for over two decades following his retirement from professional football.
However, as political divisions deepened in the UK over issues like Brexit and the Israel-Hamas conflict, Lineker frequently found himself in the midst of controversy. Branded a leftist by conservative media, he often clashed with BBC executives over his social media activity, particularly a retweet that was criticized for containing antisemitic content, leading to his swift exit from the network after a public apology.
Watch on Deadline
He currently hosts the successful podcast The Rest is Football, which Netflix has acquired, produced by his own company, Goalhanger, co-founded with Tony Pastor.

Lineker is set to premiere globally on Prime Video in 2027, produced by Orchard Studios with Nat Lippiett and former Amazon Studios UK head Dan Grabiner serving as executive producers.
The series aims to present the ultimate narrative of Lineker’s life and career, from his early days in Leicester to his time as a football legend and subsequently a renowned broadcaster and entrepreneur. It will include personal archives and unseen materials, featuring candid interviews with Lineker, and insights from his family, peers, friends, and critics.
Lippiett noted, “Everyone has their own version of Gary Lineker: the World Cup hero, the Match of the Day host, the activist, or even the crisps’ spokesman. For years, he’s been a pivotal part of the national discourse.”
Grabiner added, “This series will go behind the headlines to explore the various facets of one of Britain’s most famous yet polarizing figures, with honest reflections from Gary himself and those who have been close to him throughout both his successes and controversies.”
Recent sports documentaries by Prime Video include All or Nothing: Manchester City, Novak Djokovic: The Wolf in Winter, Rory McIlroy: The Masters Wait, and Built in Birmingham: Brady & the Blues.
