It’s a tie game between Disney+ and Netflix, each with a score of one.
Disney’s online platform has secured a partnership with ex-Manchester United star and rising media entrepreneur Gary Neville for podcast productions through his company, The Overlap, which is under Global Studios.
This comes on the heels of Netflix’s venture into soccer podcasts earlier this summer by supporting World Cup episodes of Gary Lineker’s program, The Rest is Football. This move underscores the influence of podcasts hosted by former athletes and the eagerness of international streaming services to acquire video-centric sports podcasts.
The deal includes 40 upcoming episodes of Neville’s Stick to Football and 50 episodes of a new series, Stick to United with Wayne Rooney. For the upcoming 2026/27 season, Disney+ will be the main sponsor for both series.
Available Streaming Options
Episodes of Stick to Football will be available on Disney+, various podcast platforms, and The Overlap’s YouTube channel. Stick to United will also be featured on Disney+ and other platforms, with twenty episodes exclusively on Disney+ for a limited period. Additionally, Disney+ has commissioned six exclusive, extended-length episodes of Stick to United that will include special guests.
The Stick to Football podcast features football legends Neville, Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott, Ian Wright, and Roy Keane as hosts, inviting guests to discuss a wide range of football topics.
Stick to United will have Manchester United’s all-time top scorer Wayne Rooney and Mark Goldbridge, a prominent and passionate United fan known for his energetic YouTube presence, as hosts. They will cover the latest happenings and key discussions about the English Premier League team.
After selling his media channels to The Overlap in April, Goldbridge described Stick to United as “a historic milestone for fan-driven media.”
Stick to United will begin streaming weekly starting next Tuesday (August 18), and Stick to Football will be available weekly in the UK and Ireland from Thursday (August 20).
Neville, who co-chairs The Overlap, expressed enthusiasm about the “unique partnership that feels just right for everyone involved,” noting, “We’re not altering our identity. Our community will keep enjoying our content just as they have on YouTube, while now Disney+’s vast global streaming audience will also get to experience and appreciate it.”
Sean Doyle, Disney+ EMEA’s VP of Unscripted Content, shared his excitement about entering a new phase of sports entertainment on Disney+, stating, “We are thrilled to bring one of the UK’s most beloved and distinctive sports programs to our platform with Stick to Football and now Stick to United with Wayne Rooney. Integrating these shows enhances our local original content as we continue to delve into new sports formats, complementing our existing array of drama, comedy, documentary, reality, and ESPN offerings on Disney+.”
In January, Global, a major UK-based radio and audio powerhouse, acquired a significant stake in The Overlap.
