Raheem Morris Says Kirk Cousins Has ‘Got to Play Better’ for Falcons
Kirk Cousins Delivers Lackluster Performance in Falcons’ Victory

While the Atlanta Falcons managed to snap their four-game losing streak with a Monday Night Football victory against the Las Vegas Raiders, quarterback Kirk Cousins’ performance left much to be desired.

Cousins kicked off the game on a high note, successfully completing his first four passes, including a striking 30-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Drake London in the closing moments of the fourth quarter. However, following this drive, the Falcons’ offensive momentum significantly dwindled.

Post-touchdown, the Falcons could only muster two field goals and missed another field goal attempt. These scoring opportunities stemmed from short fields, requiring minimal advancement from Cousins and the offense to position themselves for the field goals but failing to secure additional touchdowns.

The burden of securing the win fell largely on the Falcons’ defense and special teams after the first quarter. The defense was instrumental, forcing three turnovers from former Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder, who was playing due to an injury. Their efforts led to a forced punt and a safety, contributing nine of the team’s 15 points for the day.

Cousins concluded the game with a modest 11-of-17 for 112 yards, scoring one touchdown and throwing one interception. Given the critical point in the season with slim postseason and division title hopes, his performance was notably disappointing, especially considering his four-year, $180 million contract with the Falcons.

“He’s got to play better,” stated Falcons head coach Raheem Morris postgame. “We have to find a way to get him to play better. We have to play better at the quarterback position.”

The Falcons had hoped that signing Cousins would elevate the team’s performance, but instead, he has struggled to meet expectations, continuing a trend of underperforming quarterbacks for the team since Matt Ryan’s departure.

When questioned about possibly replacing Cousins with rookie Michael Penix Jr. if the quarterback’s performance doesn’t improve, Morris avoided a direct answer, stating, “Our mentality is to find a way to win the next game.”

Despite their recent win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Falcons, at 7-7, still do not control their own fate in the NFC South. They must rely on the 8-6 Buccaneers losing at least one of their remaining three games to have a chance at clinching the division. Given the Buccaneers’ relatively easy schedule and Cousins’ uninspiring performances, this scenario seems increasingly unlikely.
