The Carolina Hurricanes have decided to trade Mikka Rantanen to the Dallas Stars following unsuccessful negotiations for a contract extension. Rantanen had joined the Hurricanes in January, as reported by ESPN’s Emily Kaplan.
In return, the Hurricanes will receive two first-round picks, two third-round picks, and center Logan Stankoven from the Stars.
Originally acquired from the Colorado Avalanche in a complex three-team deal, Rantanen was expected to extend his contract with Carolina. However, when the contract talks did not pan out, the Hurricanes opted to trade him to Dallas.
According to Elliotte Friedman from SportsNet, Rantanen’s new deal with the Stars will span eight years and carry an average annual value (AAV) of $12 million.
This season, playing for both the Avalanche and the Hurricanes, Rantanen has racked up 70 points in 62 games, including 27 goals and 43 assists.
