Here we go again, with another young phenom catching the eye of NBA franchises. Just a couple of years back, it was Victor Wembanyama, a towering presence from France who quickly became the talk of the 2023 draft. Now, it’s Cooper Flagg, a slightly shorter but explosively athletic forward from Duke who’s fast becoming the favorite for the top pick in the upcoming draft.
Flagg was in Las Vegas this Tuesday, playing against the top-seeded Kansas Jayhawks. His journey from a small town in Maine to a shining star at Duke has been well documented. He’s already made waves with standout performances, like scoring 26 points against Kentucky and 24 against Arizona. Flagg has consistently demonstrated his defensive skills with at least two blocks in most of his early games.
The game against Kansas was tough, facing a team full of seasoned players like 24-year-old center Hunter Dickinson. Kansas played a tough, physical game, sending multiple defenders at him and disrupting his flow. Flagg’s stats for the first half were modest: just two points, three assists, and no standout plays.

“Cooper responded well,” said Duke coach Jon Scheyer.
Despite his efforts, Flagg missed a crucial free throw and lost a key possession in the final minute. Yet, his overall performance continues to impress.
“It’s disappointing,” Scheyer remarked. “But there’s a lot we can learn from this.”
Flagg’s athleticism and skill are evident. He’s not just athletic; he’s profoundly athletic, which enhances his prowess as a shot-blocker. His agility allows him to guard perimeter players effectively, and he’s tough enough to hold his own in the paint. While still refining his perimeter skills, Flagg is a force driving to the hoop.
His maturity on the court is also notable. Even when Kansas focused their defense on him, Flagg kept his cool, facilitating plays for his team. His ability to adapt and contribute in various ways hints at a bright future.
Comparisons? Flagg shows glimpses of Aaron Gordon and even Scottie Pippen. His defensive versatility is reminiscent of Andrei Kirilenko at his peak. And at just 17, the sky is the limit for him.
Flagg’s fan base is growing. After a match, Arizona’s KJ Lewis commented on his exceptional athleticism. Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Kevin Garnett have all praised his skills and determination after seeing him play with USA Basketball.
In the NBA, the rush to secure top draft picks hasn’t kicked into full gear yet, but it will. And Flagg, with his potential to reshape a franchise, will be a key target for teams like Utah Jazz, Washington Wizards, Toronto Raptors, and Portland Trail Blazers.
