Television’s recent normalization of the R-word has prompted Dani Bowman, a notable figure from the show Love on the Spectrum, to voice her disapproval regarding the term’s casual usage.
Bowman expressed her concerns following an episode of Euphoria on HBO, where Sydney Sweeney’s character Cassie stated, “I’m not r—ed” after being likened to a Democrat. Bowman emphasized that this term should be completely eliminated from our vocabulary.
“The struggle for inclusion and acceptance has been too intense to let the R-word become commonplace again,” Bowman explained to TMZ. As an individual on the autism spectrum, she finds the reacceptance of such language in pop culture distressing. “For years, that term has been a tool for bullying and demeaning neurodiverse individuals. Its resurgence, masked as edgy or humorous, is not a sign of progress but a regressive move. We have spent considerable time educating about the harm of such language, and all that effort is undone when disrespect becomes fashionable once more.”
Bowman, who also founded DaniMation Entertainment, shared her disappointment in Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson for using the R-word during a joke about NBA’s Draymond Green at Netflix’s The Roast of Kevin Hart.

“While I respect Dwayne Johnson and his achievements, I am let down by his use of the R-word, even if it was part of a comedic act,” Bowman said. She stressed that such language has a lasting negative impact as it has historically been used to belittle individuals with disabilities and those who are neurodiverse. “We have made strides in awareness and inclusion; reverting to such language in entertainment undermines these efforts. Humor does not need to be at the expense of a community that has fought valiantly for recognition and acceptance.”
“When you disrespect one of us, you disrespect all of us,” Bowman added firmly. She advocates for the total prohibition of the word, noting, “I have always disliked the R-word as it diminishes the dignity of people.”
In her advocacy for the representation of neurodivergent individuals, Bowman has also previously criticized Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for his remarks about people on the autism spectrum.
