The newest College Football Playoff rankings were unveiled on Tuesday night, sparking discussions about Georgia’s placement. Despite victories over highly ranked teams like Texas (No. 3) and Tennessee (No. 11), Georgia found themselves at No. 10, even though they are ranked No. 8 in the AP Top 25 poll.
This has continued the ongoing debate throughout the season about why the committee seems reluctant to recognize Georgia’s achievements against a challenging schedule.
Right after the rankings were publicized, CFP Committee chair Warde Manuel tried to justify Georgia’s ranking in a conference call (details courtesy of ESPN).
“Certainly, Georgia has an impressive win at Texas,” Manuel commented on the discrepancy between Georgia and Texas. “When the committee reviewed the overall performances, despite Georgia having two losses to top-25 teams, we still see Texas as a very competitive team deserving of the third spot.”
“They boast a top-5 defense, and with Quinn Ewers at the helm, they have one of the strongest passing offenses in the nation. After thorough consideration, we positioned them at No. 3. It’s not a slight against Georgia, which is undoubtedly a strong team, but they did face difficulties against Ole Miss and yet secured a significant victory over Tennessee recently.”
“We’ll keep an eye on both teams as the season progresses.”
When asked if Georgia could potentially host a playoff game based on their strong schedule and the criteria that favored Texas, Manuel responded affirmatively.
“Yes,” Manuel stated. “The committee engaged in extensive debates about Georgia, Mississippi, Miami, Alabama, and others. We analyzed and discussed their rankings and the rationale behind them in depth.”
“The discussions were incredibly detailed. We’re looking at very fine distinctions and comparisons, so I can assure you that the committee’s review was intense over the past few days.”
Georgia is set to conclude its 2024 season with upcoming games at home against UMass and Georgia Tech. The final CFP rankings will be announced on December 8.
