The 12-team College Football Playoff field was announced on Sunday, marking a new era in college football as the expanded postseason aims to determine the national champion on January 20 in Atlanta.
An eventful Saturday confirmed No. 1 Oregon at the top after their win against Penn State in the Big Ten Championship, while former No. 2 Texas and No. 8 SMU dropped in their conference championships. The playoff games are scheduled to begin with the first round on December 20-21, broadcasted across ABC/ESPN and TNT/Max.
The surprise of the weekend came with SMU’s defeat to Clemson in the ACC Championship, sparking debates about the final spots. Alabama, a team with three national titles in the last decade, and the University of Miami were left out after the weekend’s results, with the committee feeling Alabama didn’t show enough to earn a playoff berth.
Teams from the West including Oregon, Arizona State, and Boise State, alongside Georgia, secured first-round byes through their conference victories. They will face the winners from the first round in the quarterfinals on December 31 and January 1, with the semifinals slated for January 9-10. All these games post-first round will be aired on ABC or ESPN.
Watch on Deadline
The championship game will take place at 7:30 p.m. ET on January 20 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, broadcast on ESPN.
