‘Cobra Kai’ Creators Wanted Hilary Swank To Return For Final Season, Tease Idea They “Can Revisit” In Franchise

While many familiar faces from the Karate Kid saga have made their comeback in recent films and streaming series, one character from Mr. Miyagi’s past hasn’t been seen onscreen in over three decades.

Josh Heald, along with his fellow co-creators Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg of Netflix’s Cobra Kai, made efforts to have Hilary Swank reprise her role as Julie Pierce from 1994’s The Next Karate Kid in the show’s sixth and final season.

“Early on, before the season started, we reached out to see if there was any way she could join,” Heald shared with Entertainment Weekly. “We had a rough sketch of an idea for her character that didn’t require her to commit to a full 10 episodes.”

Heald and his team proposed an initial concept to Swank’s representatives, hoping it would lead to a more in-depth discussion about her character’s return.

“She was very gracious about it, but unfortunately, we never got to have that detailed conversation that we usually have when we reintroduce legacy characters,” Heald commented.

Swank, a two-time Oscar-winning actress, was not looking to revisit her role at that time. “She gracefully declined our proposal to meet, preferring not to have us make an elaborate pitch when she wasn’t prepared to commit,” Heald explained.

Heald views Julie Pierce as “an important but missing piece of the Miyagi-verse,” especially after the recent Karate Kid: Legends release, which saw the return of Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso, Jackie Chan as Mr. Han, and William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence.

“It was a bit disappointing, as we aim to bring everyone back, but it didn’t drastically alter any major storyline we had developed,” Heald added. “There’s still potential to explore this part of the universe in future projects.”
