David E. Kelley Is “Hopeful” For ‘Big Little Lies’ Season 3: “We All Want To Do It Again”

David E. Kelley shares the anticipation of fans and the cast alike for the next chapter of Big Little Lies, the HBO series adapted from Liane Moriarty’s book.

In a recent conversation with People, the accomplished television writer and producer expressed optimism about the prospects of a third season, which would follow more than six years after the second season concluded.

“There’s a strong hope it will come to fruition,” Kelley remarked, having recently received the Visionary Award at the Gotham TV Awards. “We thoroughly enjoyed creating the first two seasons, and we’re all eager to dive back in. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it will come together.”

Although key cast members—Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, and Zoë Kravitz—have shown interest in reprising their roles, they have yet to officially sign on. Kravitz recently mentioned she is “waiting by the phone” for updates on the project’s progress.

“Getting everyone’s schedules aligned, considering the high-profile nature of the cast and their management teams, is challenging, but their commitment is strong,” said Kelley, the mind behind Presumed Innocent. He added, “It was quite encouraging to hear that the actresses are on board for another season.”

The buzz about a third season began swirling when Nicole Kidman hinted at ongoing discussions with HBO about continuing the dark, coastal mystery drama. Late last year, HBO’s Casey Bloys mentioned that the delay was due to waiting for more source material from Moriarty, who has revealed she is working on a sequel to her novel that will introduce a leap in time and new characters.

As Moriarty is still in the process of writing the book, Kelley noted that the project is “still in the early stages.”

He concluded, “We haven’t had a chance to come together and brainstorm yet, but with such a talented group, I’m optimistic that once we do, we’ll be able to flesh out a compelling continuation.”
