BBC Buys ‘Ghosts Australia’ To Sit Alongside Original British Sitcom

The BBC has added Ghosts Australia to its lineup, joining the British and American adaptations already being broadcast by the UK network.

Produced by BBC Studios Australia Productions, this eight-episode series features Tamala (Cleverman, Nowhere Boys) and Rowan Witt (Totally Completely Fine, Book of Mormon) who play a couple that inherits a rundown rural mansion, which they soon discover is occupied by a quirky collection of ghosts.

The cast of spectral characters includes Mandy McElhinney (Love Child, House of Hancock), Brent Hill (Hamilton, School of Rock), Ines English (Last Days of the Space Age, The Last Anniversary), Michelle Brasier (Thank God You’re Here, Aunty Donna), George Zhao (The Family Law, Gold Diggers), and Jackson Tozer (Ricky Stanicky, Deadloch).

Originally produced for Paramount+ in Australia, the series will be available on the BBC iPlayer and BBC Three in the UK. The production was supported by Screenwest and the Western Australian Production Attraction Incentive, with BBC Studios handling distribution rights.

The show is directed by Christiaan Van Vuuren and Madeleine Dyer, penned by Josh Mapleston. Libby Butler serves both as script editor and writer, with additional writing by Shontell Ketchell, Philip Tarl Denson, and Steph Tisdell. Bree-Anne Sykes is the producer, and the executive production team includes Sophia Zachariou, Kylie Washington, EVP and Creative Director at BBC Studios ANZ, and Sophia Mogford, Paramount ANZ Head of Scripted and Comedy.

Ghosts Australia follows several adaptations of the BBC’s original hit sitcom from Monumental Television, which stars Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe. The American version on Fox, featuring stars such as Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar, has also enjoyed multiple successful seasons.
