‘XO, Kitty’ Stars Anna Cathcart And Anthony Keyvan Discuss Kitty And Q’s Friendship, Callbacks To ‘To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’ And Season 3 Hopes

WARNING: This article includes significant spoilers for the finale of XO, Kitty Season 2.

Centering on a complex web of romantic entanglements that surpasses a mere love triangle, XO, Kitty also delves into the deep friendship between Katherine Song Covey (Anna Cathcart), affectionately known as the “chaos queen” by her close friend Q (Anthony Keyvan).

Cathcart openly admits that her character, Kitty, still has a lot to learn about managing her “very big, very chaotic heart,” including how to reciprocate the support she receives from her friends, especially Q.

“Q really shows up for Kitty. As I watched the season, there were multiple moments where I thought, ‘Girl, you need to step up for your friends,’” Cathcart shared with Deadline. “Kitty always has good intentions, but sometimes she just gets carried away.”

In the following interview, Cathcart and Keyvan discuss how the narrative broadened in Season 2, from Q’s track events to certain scenes that echo the original To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before movie starring Lana Condor and Noah Centineo, who even made a cameo this season. They also shared their hopes for their characters if there is a Season 3.

DEADLINE: Season 1 ended with a complex romantic situation. How does that evolve in Season 2?

ANNA CATHCART: Kitty is much more self-assured this season. She’s determined to have a smoother, less tumultuous semester. While things may not necessarily calm down, she has a clearer understanding of her emotions and identity. It’s refreshing to see her navigate her romantic desires and confront unresolved feelings—a relatable journey at any life stage. Witnessing Kitty tackle these universal challenges adds a special touch to this season.

DEADLINE: Anthony, this season features an enemies-to-lovers storyline for you. Could you talk about that and the track scenes?

ANTHONY KEYVAN: I’m a fan of the enemies-to-lovers dynamic, and I think we executed it wonderfully between Jin and Q. It was great working with Joshua [Lee] on this. Regarding the track scenes, I opted not to use a stunt double. I wanted to tackle this new skill set myself. The production team was fantastic, providing a trainer—who even competed in the Olympics—to help us. He didn’t speak English, so his coaching was very straightforward: “Just run, go.” It was intense. We trained about four times a week, learning the correct techniques, like starting from the blocks. Initially, I underestimated the skill involved in sprinting, but I learned the mechanics of it, which I think really showed on screen.

During one shoot, I was supposed to win a race, but the background athletes, who were real runners, kept outpacing me. We had to ask them to slow down. I’m grateful to the production for pushing me. Nowadays, they often use stunt doubles or camera tricks for such scenes, but I appreciated the chance to genuinely learn and perform the sequences myself.

DEADLINE: Anna, there are a few scenes that reference the first To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before film. Were you aware of these homages ahead of time? What did that mean to you?

CATHCART: Yes, you caught them all! It was amazing to see the level of detail everyone put into recreating those moments. We had the original scenes on monitors during rehearsals to ensure everything matched perfectly—from the position of my ponytail to the track lines. These nods were subtle yet very intentional. I’m excited for fans to notice them.

DEADLINE: Assuming XO, Kitty is renewed for a third season, where would you like to see your characters go?

CATHCART: I’d love for Kitty to continue exploring her identity and what that means for her. She’s always balancing being true to herself with managing her tumultuous emotions. Following her journey of self-discovery and love is what makes the show so captivating. I hope she never loses her passionate nature. It’s one of her most endearing traits.

KEYVAN: For Q, I’d like to see the opposite. He’s usually so composed and the dependable one in the group. It would be interesting to see him struggle with confidence and maybe face challenges that are more typical for Kitty.

CATHCART: And have Kitty be his support. I’d definitely like to see that role reversal.

DEADLINE: What was it like to reunite with Noah Centineo and Janel Parish towards the end?

CATHCART: It was incredibly special. Being back with these actors, who I’ve admired and looked up to for so long, was like coming home. Yet it also felt completely new, as we were bringing these characters to life in a different stage of their lives. Their support means the world to me. They are remarkable individuals who have been so encouraging and proud of our work on the show.

DEADLINE: The dynamic with Min Ho was captivating, and that final scene left us wanting more. Can you share your thoughts on that?

CATHCART: I love how we played with the tension between them. The almost-kisses and the intense stares added so much to their dynamic. Filming those scenes, especially the dream sequence in Kitty’s room, was hilarious. We couldn’t stop laughing, especially during a close-up shot that was particularly awkward. It’s a testament to how comfortable we’ve become with each other compared to the first season. It was a joy to film those moments with such confidence and mutual trust.
