At San Diego Comic-Con, Noah Hawley alongside the cast of Alien: Earth stirred up excitement among fans with their presentation in Hall H this past Friday.
Those present at the event were treated to the premiere of the first episode, set to officially release on August 12, followed by a question and answer session with stars like Timothy Olyphant, Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, Samuel Blenkin, and Babou Ceesay.
Hawley expressed his desire for the audience to view his adaptation as a fresh take on the familiar Xenomorph terror, while still honoring the legacy of the preceding films, particularly the original Alien.
“Adapting these films comes from a place of deep admiration,” Hawley remarked. “These films profoundly influenced me growing up, so stepping onto the Maginot set, which is a replica of Ridley Scott’s Nostromo, feels like merging past with present. It’s both awe-inspiring and humbling to witness the actors’ reactions as they first set foot on set.”
Where to Watch
In Alien: Earth, the year is 2120, and Earth is controlled by five mega-corporations: Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic, and Threshold. The storyline thickens as Prodigy embarks on an ambitious project to develop a new hybrid of human and synthetic beings. However, the plot takes a dramatic turn when a spaceship from Weyland-Yutani crashes into Prodigy City, hinting at the familiar chaos that ensues from such incidents.
“Recreating the initial horror of discovering the Xenomorph’s lifecycle from the original Alien is a challenge,” Hawley explained. “Introducing new characters and unknown creatures helps bring back that sense of horror. Stepping into the creative shoes of legends like H.R. Giger and Ridley Scott is daunting but exhilarating.”
According to Olyphant, while the series promises its share of monstrous frights, the truly haunting moments come from intense human interactions. “Sometimes, the scenes that keep you awake at night are simply powerful exchanges between characters,” he said, adding that he’s seen four episodes so far and praises the deep character exploration.
The extended format of an eight-episode series allows for a richer development of the narrative and characters, different from the more straightforward approach of the films. “Each episode builds on its drama, layered with horror elements,” Hawley noted. “It’s not just about survival; it’s about crafting a compelling drama where the stakes are genuinely high, and yes, some characters may not survive.”
Alien: Earth is set to premiere on FX and Hulu on August 12.
