Major Spoilers Ahead for Hulu’s ‘The Testaments’ Premiere
If you’ve been following The Handmaid’s Tale and feared the absence of June Osbourne in future narratives, your worries can be put to rest. Elisabeth Moss, who notably serves as an executive producer for Hulu’s new series The Testaments, reprised her iconic role in the debut episode aired tonight.
The inclusion of June from the very first episode was a deliberate choice discussed by Bruce Miller, the showrunner and executive producer. In conversation with Deadline, Miller expressed, “June is fundamentally integral to the character of Agnes [played by Chase Infiniti]. It’s hard to envision the storyline without her influence, regardless of the original Handmaid’s Tale series.” He added, “Elisabeth has been a pivotal creative force from the start. Having her on board as an executive producer means June’s spirit is always present. We were fortunate enough to adjust our schedules to ensure her participation in the show.”
Scene Insights from ‘The Testaments’ Premiere
Set a few years after the finale of The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments reconnects us with June as part of Daisy’s (Lucy Halliday) story, set in her hometown of Toronto. The premiere episode features a scene where Daisy is longboarding her way to a store. As she enters, greeting someone inside, June is seen standing by, observing, with the Cranberries’ hit Dream setting the mood. Remarkably, no dialogue is exchanged between them.
Miller highlighted the pleasure of bringing characters from The Handmaid’s Tale into this new series to continue their journeys. “It’s incredibly satisfying not only for the actors but for me as well. It’s rare to revisit characters years later in a new context. Integrating several characters into The Testaments enriches the narrative, helping viewers reflect on their feelings towards Gilead, with June reinforcing those memories,” he explained.
According to Margaret Atwood’s book, which serves as the source material for The Testaments, Agnes is the new identity given to Hannah, the daughter of June and Luke (O-T Fagbenle), in Gilead. Additionally, Daisy is revealed to be Nicole, the younger daughter of June with Nick (Max Mighella). Despite the age differences noted in The Handmaid’s Tale finale, Miller clarified that Daisy is not Nicole in the series adaptation of The Testaments.
Lucy Halliday expressed her excitement about working alongside Moss, stating, “Having Elisabeth Moss, even just as an executive, was immensely influential. Her deep understanding of Gilead and its characters was invaluable. Most importantly, her endorsement and the space she provided for us to step into this well-established and beloved world was truly empowering.”
The premiere night of The Testaments featured three episodes, which will subsequently be available for streaming on Hulu. Future episodes will be released weekly on Wednesdays.
