Jeff Bezos & Facebook Co-Founder Eduardo Saverin Set To Buy Into English Football Giants Liverpool – Report

Jeff Bezos and Eduardo Saverin are poised to be the next major tech moguls to invest in English soccer.

Both are reportedly part of a group planning to purchase a significant share in Liverpool FC, a club with 20 English league titles, as per a Sky News report.

Initial whispers of this acquisition surfaced last month, and Mark Kleinman, Sky News’ business editor, has recently suggested that a deal for a 30% ownership by the Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which owns entities like the Washington Red Sox, is nearly finalized. Requests for comments were sent to Amazon, Saverin’s B Capital, and FSG.

Leading the consortium is Amit Bhatia, related by marriage to Indian steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal. Bhatia, who was a significant shareholder and board member at Queens Park Rangers in the English Championship, divested his shares coincidentally on the day the news about the Liverpool investment broke.

Liverpool is among the most beloved soccer teams in England, noted for their multiple top-tier league victories particularly during the 1970s and 1980s, and their six European Cups—the highest in the UK. They clinched the Premier League title most recently in the 2024-25 season but ended up in fifth place, 25 points behind the champions, Arsenal.

Although Bezos has previously considered acquiring teams like the Seattle Seahawks, stepping into Liverpool would mark his initial major foray into sports franchise ownership. His net worth is estimated to be around $300 billion.

Saverin, who helped launch Facebook with Mark Zuckerberg, now operates the private equity firm B Capital. He was also involved in a bid for Liverpool’s rivals, Chelsea, back in 2022, marking this potential deal as his first venture into the sports industry. His wealth is believed to exceed $30 billion.

Saverin’s departure from Facebook in 2005 followed Zuckerberg’s actions that essentially diluted his shares and dismissed him from active involvement, a narrative dramatized in Aaron Sorkin’s film The Social Network, featuring Andrew Garfield as Saverin and Jesse Eisenberg as Zuckerberg.

According to Sky News, FSG is expected to publicly announce the transaction in the “coming days,” though it might extend into the following week. The deal values Liverpool at $6 billion, positioning it as one of the most significant investments in soccer history.

This development arises during a particularly tumultuous period in global soccer, with UEFA clashing with FIFA after its President Gianni Infantino proposed selling World Cup stakes to figures like Joshua Kushner, brother-in-law to former President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Following widespread disapproval from various organizations, this proposal was withdrawn. Despite calls for his resignation, Infantino seems to have maintained enough support to stay in his position for the time being.
