This weekend, the Miami Heat are set to play two actual basketball games, first hitting the road to face the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday afternoon, followed by a clash with the Houston Rockets on Sunday evening.
Yet, these matchups have been overshadowed by a rapidly unfolding drama concerning the future of Heat forward Jimmy Butler.
Butler will stay in Miami over the weekend, focusing on his fitness, as reported by Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel on Friday afternoon. This report came on the heels of an earlier statement from ESPN’s Shams Charania suggesting Butler’s preference for a trade.
These revelations have sparked a range of negative responses from the Heat’s management, with coach Erik Spoelstra describing the situation as “unfortunate” and team president Pat Riley firmly stating that Butler would not be traded.
At 35, Butler is reportedly seeking a maximum contract, and he holds a $52.4 million player option for the 2025-26 season.
This season, the six-time All-Star and five-time All-NBA player is averaging 18.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.9 assists over 20 games.
