“Tomb Raider” Series Violated US Safety Rules on Set!

BREAKING NEWS: The latest installment of the Tomb Raider series by Amazon MGM Studios has faced scrutiny from UK safety regulators.

The UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the high-stakes drama series violated several British safety regulations during its filming at Shinfield Studios earlier this year, as per a ruling that had not been disclosed before.

Details emerged that Project Temple Productions Ltd, the entity behind the production of the Tomb Raider series starring Sophie Turner, failed to comply with the Health and Safety At Work Act of 1974 and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations of 2002.

Amazon MGM Studios has chosen not to comment on the matter.

The HSE investigation concluded that Project Temple Productions Ltd neglected necessary “biological monitoring” for crew members to ensure safety measures were adequate when handling isocyanate paints, a known trigger for workplace asthma.

According to HSE guidelines, proper personal protective gear is mandatory when using isocyanate paints, and employers must be aware of the “invisible mist” these substances emit, which can linger for up to 20 minutes.

In April, an “improvement notice” was issued to Project Temple, demanding rectification of these safety breaches. Compliance was achieved within a month, as per the update on HSE’s website.

It’s uncommon for HSE to issue such notices to television productions; over the past four years, only four productions have been issued such notices, with Tomb Raider being the most notable.

The series, penned by Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge, commenced filming in January. Amazon MGM Studios recently released a first glimpse of Turner portraying the iconic video game character Lara Croft.

The HSE’s findings weren’t the only setback; Turner sustained a minor injury during filming, leading to a production halt of approximately two weeks to allow the Game of Thrones alum time to heal.

The Tomb Raider series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios for Prime Video in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics. The cast includes notables such as Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, and others, with a creative team led by Waller-Bridge and co-showrunner Chad Hodge. Other executive producers include Jonathan Van Tulleken, who also serves as a director.

Additional executive production is handled by Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robins through Wells Street Films, alongside others from Story Kitchen and Legendary Television. Co-executive producer roles and production responsibilities are shared among several team members.
