After an eight-year gap, Constance Wu will be back with the Young family in the HBO follow-up series to Crazy Rich Asians.

On Friday, the Golden Globe–nominated actress teased that co-writer Adele Lim delivered a script she found “really funny,” and revealed that production is happening in New York City for the hourlong drama — the series that HBO officially ordered earlier this month.

Explaining how the show connects to the original film on Today, Wu noted that the first movie was adapted from Kevin Kwan’s novel and that Kwan has written multiple books set in the Crazy Rich Asians universe, which the new series draws from. She said the cast is excited to return and that filming in New York — where she lives — is an added bonus.

Wu confirmed that production will begin next year on the eight-episode run and that she’s already read a script. She described it as very funny and expressed confidence in the material.

She added that they’re fortunate to have Adele Lim leading the project as showrunner and writer — the same writer who worked on the original film — and praised Lim’s intelligence and talent, saying it makes her feel very confident with Lim guiding the series.

Earlier in the month, Deadline reported that HBO had given the green light to the project after roughly two years of development led by Lim alongside the film’s director Jon M. Chu, producer Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson.
