James Gunn Confirms He’s Still “Working On” Viola Davis-Led Amanda Waller Series: “Some Things Have Moved Faster Than Others”

In the expanding universe of the DCU, James Gunn is sparking excitement with news of various upcoming projects, including a highly anticipated series centered on Task Force X’s commander Amanda Waller, portrayed by Viola Davis in the 2016 hit Suicide Squad.

In a recent discussion with People, Gunn, who is at the helm of Superman, and his co-CEO at DC Studios, Peter Safran, revealed they are actively developing the show.

Gunn shared, “We’re actively working on it, and we’re hopeful. Some projects are progressing quicker than others. Waller’s has been slower, but I’m eager to see Viola step back into her role as Waller.”

Previously in February, both Gunn and Safran had confirmed to Deadline that the Waller series — which delves into the morally ambiguous actions of the U.S. government’s espionage chief who sends the notorious Suicide Squad on perilous missions — was still in development, albeit facing challenges.

Safran admitted, “We’ve tried a few different approaches with Waller, but haven’t nailed it yet.”

Adding to this, Gunn noted the need to prioritize other series, mentioning, “Waller has been challenging, the writers’ strike didn’t help, and we had a specific timeline to start Peacemaker first.”

Gunn elaborated, “We initially planned to launch Waller before the second season of Peacemaker, but I ended up completing Peacemaker swiftly and it was ready to go.”

Davis has previously portrayed Waller in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad and its sequel directed by Gunn in 2021, titled The Suicide Squad. The development of the Waller spinoff was first announced in 2022, with Watchmen writer Christal Henry onboard as writer and executive producer alongside Davis. While Peacemaker leans towards comedy, Waller is categorized as a drama, and Davis reprised her role in the first season of Peacemaker.

Furthermore, in the following year, it was revealed that Doom Patrol creator Jeremy Carver would join Henry to co-write Waller.

In addition to Waller, Max is set to release another spinoff, Lanterns, which is expected to premiere in early 2026.
