‘Real Time’: Stephen A. Smith Talks “Possible” Presidential Bid, Says He’s “Disgusted” With Democratic Party

As the Democratic Party gears up for a revival in 2028, Stephen A. Smith is toying with the notion of entering the presidential race.

During an episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, the prominent NBA commentator confessed that while the thought of running for president is hard to fathom, he hasn’t completely dismissed the idea following prior discussions about transitioning into political life.

“You know, life is pretty amazing right now. I’m keeping my options open,” he remarked to Maher. “The thought of actually doing it seems out there, but I haven’t shut that door because I’m really unhappy with what’s happening among the Democrats.”

Smith added, “When I look at the national representation of the Democratic Party, it’s absent. To me, even a construction worker could snag the Democratic nomination at this point—it’s that bad. They really need to pull themselves together. And pardon my words, but they’re heading for a major defeat if they don’t. The party is in chaos. It’s time for new leadership.”

In April, Smith commented on an article discussing rumors of his potential political career, affirming that he is “officially keeping all options on the table” for a 2028 candidacy. “Enough playing games,” he partially tweeted. “I despise the idea of being a politician. But I’m tired of all this chaos.”

Later, Smith clarified to Deadline that he has “no plans” of pursuing the presidency. “I’m keeping my options open, but honestly, I have no wish to engage in politics,” he stated in May.

“I’ve got a great life. I just renewed my contract with ESPN. I’m taking roles on General Hospital and Law & Order,” Smith elaborated. “My life is incredibly blessed. Why would I want to spoil that by entering politics? That’s my initial thought. But ultimately, you never know what life has in store, so I keep my options open, and that’s what I’m doing.”

This interview followed a March report by Deadline that he had signed a lucrative five-year, $100 million contract with ESPN. By June, he had also agreed to host two additional shows on SiriusXM.
