Looking to capitalize on their first ALCS appearance since 2016, the Cleveland Guardians are set to retain one of their top pitchers.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Friday afternoon that the Guardians are finalizing a one-year deal with Shane Bieber that includes a player option for 2026. The contract is reportedly worth $10 million, with the player option valued at $16 million.
Bieber, aged 29, was limited to just two starts in 2024 due to season-ending Tommy John surgery. Despite his brief appearance, he was impressive, striking out 20 over 12 innings without allowing a run. Remarkably, the Guardians clinched the AL Central title in his absence.
Shane Bieber’s contract with the Guardians includes a $10 million salary for 2025. The player option for $16 million also features a $4 million buyout. A healthy return could position him well for free agency next winter, potentially securing a substantial long-term deal at age 30.

Over his seven-year tenure with the Guardians, Bieber has been selected for two All-Star teams, secured a Cy Young Award in 2020, and maintained a 3.22 ERA.
The Guardians are scheduled to kick off their 2025 season on March 27 against the Kansas City Royals.
