Steve Cohen, the billionaire owner of the New York Mets, expressed his frustration to Scott Boras, the agent for free agent first baseman Pete Alonso, showing his displeasure with the current state of contract talks.
Stressful Negotiations
During an event called Mets’ Amazin’ Day, Cohen spoke candidly with reporters about the ongoing discussions with Alonso, a four-time All-Star, labeling them as “exhausting.” Amidst cheers from Mets fans at the event shouting “We want Pete!”, Cohen revealed, “We’ve made a significant offer to Pete. And what David mentioned holds true, he has every right to seek out the best market for himself, and that’s exactly what he is doing. From my perspective, it’s been a tiring back-and-forth. Dealing with Soto was challenging, but this has proven even more difficult. The major issue here is that we’ve already put forth a substantial offer.”
Cohen further expressed his dissatisfaction with the counteroffers. “I’m not pleased with the structures being proposed back to us. They seem highly skewed against us. I have strong feelings about this.”
According to reports, the Mets proposed a three-year deal to Alonso worth between $68 and $70 million. This offer did not include any deferred payments, which has been a sticking point in the negotiations.
Alonso, who initially sought a longer contract, is reportedly still open to a three-year agreement to stay in Queens. Meanwhile, as negotiations continue, he has been in contact with other teams, most notably the Toronto Blue Jays, as reported by SNY’s Andy Martino.
Since bursting onto the scene as the 2019 National League Rookie of the Year and setting a rookie record with 53 home runs, Alonso has become a key player for the Mets. He has hit over 40 home runs in two seasons following his debut year and has earned considerable respect from his teammates. Star shortstop Francisco Lindor mentioned that the team dynamic would “change” if Alonso were not to return, and outfielder Brandon Nimmo expressed his hope to see the powerful hitter back in Queens.
This offseason, the Mets have been active, bringing in players like Juan Soto, Clay Holmes, Frankie Montas, and A.J. Minter, and re-signing Jesse Winker and Sean Manaea. Despite this, Cohen noted the potential of moving forward with an internal option for first base if the lengthy discussions with Alonso do not culminate soon. “I’m being brutally honest,” Cohen remarked. “I dislike the current state of negotiations. However, I remain open to changes. If things continue as they are, we might have to proceed with the players we currently have.”
