Mets Agree to Sign Former Yankees Closer Clay Holmes to Three-Year Contract
Last season, Holmes achieved a personal best with 30 saves for the Yankees.

Clay Holmes is making headlines by switching teams within the iconic Subway Series rivalry.

As per several sources, the ex-Yankees closer has inked a three-year contract with the New York Mets.

The agreement, valued at $38 million with an option to leave after two years, has been reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan. He notes that the Mets intend to convert Holmes, who has primarily been a bullpen pitcher throughout his MLB career, into a starting pitcher.

Last year, the 31-year-old Holmes recorded a career-high 30 saves in 67 games, achieving a 3.65 ERA, 68 strikeouts, and a 1.302 WHIP with the Yankees. He made his second All-Star team appearance in 2024 but was later removed from his role as closer in September.

Holmes’ signing marks the Mets’ second significant free agent acquisition this offseason, following the addition of pitcher Frankie Montas. Additionally, it has been reported that New York is one of the final four contenders in the race to sign Juan Soto.

The Mets concluded the regular season with a record of 89–73 and advanced to the 2024 NLCS, where they were defeated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games.
