BREAKING NEWS: A serendipitous meeting between a German-Brazilian translator and the Swedish Crown Prince has sparked the creation of Queen Silvia, a high-profile drama series in production for Prime Video. Filming is underway for the series, which explores a celebrated European royal romance. The series will be available on Prime Video in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the Nordic countries, with free-to-air broadcast in Germany on SAT.1. Beta Film is handling international sales.
The translator, Silvia Sommerlath, met the then-youthful Crown Prince Carl Gustaf by chance at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. Their love story is famously linked with ABBA’s hit ‘Dancing Queen’ as it was performed for the first time at a celebration in their honor and featured at their wedding.
The series aims to mirror the style of The Crown, offering a dramatized look at real-life royal relationships and significant events. The casting for Queen Silvia (working title) is anticipated to draw significant attention.
Available to Stream on Deadline
German actress Alicia von Rittberg (from Call My Agent! Berlin) stars as Silvia, while Swedish actor Edvin Endre (known for Vikings) portrays Carl Gustaf. The series travels between Munich, Stockholm, and the French Riviera.
Directed by Miguel Alexandre (Gran Paradiso), the script is co-written by Lisa Hofer (Black Island) and Pauline Wolff (VAKA), with Carsten Kelber serving as the showrunner. The production is a joint venture between Germany’s Pyjama Pictures and Sweden’s Unlimited Stories, with Beta Film overseeing distribution. This announcement coincides with drama buyers gathering in Lille this week for Series Mania.
The narrative will explore how Silvia, while working at the Munich Olympics, encountered Carl Gustaf, the Swedish Crown Prince, a celebrated playboy and the honorary guest at the Games.
“Queen Silvia is not merely another royal drama,” stated Justus Riesenkampff, EVP Nordics & Benelux at Beta Film. “It captures the distinctive journey of two individuals from vastly different backgrounds.”
Producer Carsten Kelber of Pyjama Pictures remarked, “This represents one of the greatest love stories of our era—not only between two individuals but also between two nations. Focusing on their relationship and presenting it in a sophisticated yet contemporary manner is both magical and modern.”
Frida Wallman, Producer at Unlimited Stories, added, “Being involved in the first dramatized series about our Swedish royal couple is both an honor and exciting. The deep research integrated into the scripts and the outstanding cooperation between Sweden and Germany in this production make us eager for audiences globally to experience our work.”
Beta Film has a history of successful royal dramas, with the Dutch series Máxima gaining popularity. Upcoming projects include a spin-off titled The Other Royals – A Máxima Story and Ludwig, about King Ludwig II, highlighting the ongoing demand for royal narratives among international buyers. The Beta team is present at Series Mania to discuss their latest royal venture, coinciding with the industry-focused Series Mania Forum that starts today.
