EXCLUSIVE: Guillermo Arriaga’s original screenplay for the groundbreaking Mexican film Amores Perros is set to be adapted into a television series.
AF Films has secured the rights to Perro Blanco, Perro Negro and is collaborating with Sofia Vergara’s entertainment and talent management firm LatinWe to develop and produce a premium international drama series. A source involved in the project shared that Arriaga will participate as a creative advisor, while AF’s Frank Ariza will serve as the producer.
AF and LatinWe are managing development, packaging, and production, and have initiated “preliminary discussions with global partners and platforms,” according to their statement. The rights acquisition pertains solely to the original screenplay and does not include rights for a remake of Alejandro González Iñárritu’s 2000 film Amores Perros.
The screenplay laid the foundation for Iñárritu’s debut as a director, which is now regarded as one of the early classic films of the 21st century. Amores Perros debuted at Cannes, capturing the Critics’ Week Grand Prize and catapulting the careers of Iñárritu and Arriaga. It later won a BAFTA and received an Academy Award nomination.

The upcoming series will draw inspiration from the screenplay and its narrative world, notably as Amores Perros is the first installment in Iñárritu’s ‘Trilogy of Death’ which includes Arriaga’s 21 Grams and the Academy Award-winning Babel. Arriaga will contribute to shaping the story, character development, and thematic consistency.
According to the producers, the adaptation will “reexamine and broaden the thematic groundwork laid in Perro Blanco, Perro Negro – exploring interconnected lives, ethical dilemmas, and the stark emotional landscape of city life – reenvisioned through a modern perspective and extended narrative format.”
“This screenplay is one of the most significant pieces of cinematic intellectual property to come out of Latin America in the past quarter-century,” stated Ariza, founder of AF Films. “Revisiting this material at its origin and collaborating with Guillermo Arriaga not only allows us to respect its heritage but also to transform it into a new medium that resonates with today’s international audiences.”
For AF, this announcement follows their recent acquisition of remake rights to Paolo Genovese’s Follomente, the top-grossing Italian film of 2025, for a Mexican adaptation titled Love and Mind.
LatinWe, co-founded by entertainment mogul Luis Balaguer and Modern Family star Sofia Vergara, aims to bridge Latino talent with mainstream American media. Their production portfolio includes ABC’s Killer Women, El Secreto de Selena, Su Nombre Era Dolores, and the animated film Koati.
