Lily-Rose Depp Says Criticisms Of Sam Levinson “Couldn’t Be Further From The Truth”

Lily-Rose Depp has openly expressed her support for Sam Levinson, the creator of the HBO series The Idol, amidst the swirling controversy that has surrounded the show.

Depp recently spoke out in defense of Levinson following the negative reception of the short-lived drama. She mentioned that Levinson was aware of the potential controversy, given his interest in creating provocative content.

“It was really unfortunate to see people disparaging Sam [Levinson], who I’m very close to and consider part of my family,” Depp remarked during her appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “Both he and his wife Ashley, who is a producer on the show, have been incredibly kind and supportive to me.”

Depp continued, “The only downside during that time was hearing the negative chatter about Sam, especially as a director, which is not at all reflective of my experience with him. It’s always tough hearing negative comments about someone you care about.”

In the 2023 series, which was not renewed after its first season, Depp portrayed Jocelyn, a pop star who attempts a comeback after a nervous breakdown derailed her previous tour. Her character becomes entangled with Tedros (played by The Weeknd), a self-help guru with a cult following.

“I truly loved that character and the show,” Depp stated. “People will always form their own opinions, but it’s important to stay true to your reasons for your actions. That period was incredibly educational for me, pushing me out of my comfort zone beautifully and fostering significant personal growth. It remains one of the most cherished times of my life.”

Depp added, “We were definitely trying to push societal boundaries a bit, and while it was received as it was, I find it beautiful and wouldn’t change a thing about it.”

The cancellation of The Idol followed significant reshoots after the departure of director Amy Seimetz, as reported by Deadline in April 2022. The series was cut down to just five episodes, and by its conclusion, the general consensus was largely negative.
