‘Heated Rivalry’ Stars On Why Sex Scenes Are Easier To Film Than Hockey, Fan Speculation On Sexuality: “Just The Nature Of Celebrity”

WARNING: This article reveals key plot points from the Heated Rivalry episode titled ‘Rose’.

In recent times, the LGBTQ community has found a new significance in hockey, largely due to the explosive popularity of the series Heated Rivalry, which has put its actors through rigorous physical challenges both on and off the rink.

Actors Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams, portraying closeted hockey professionals Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander on the Crave/HBO Max series, shared with Deadline their preference for filming intimate scenes over the demanding hockey scenes.

“The thing with the hockey scenes is they are just painful—my feet are killing me, I get cramps, and frankly, I’m not too skilled, so I have to really focus not to come off as fake,” Williams remarked. “But the intimate scenes, those we rehearse thoroughly and know exactly what to do, making them more enjoyable to shoot.”

Storrie added, “Playing hockey at a professional level is no joke. It’s tough to convincingly portray an NHL star. The physical toll is significant, not to mention the disorientation from long periods on the ice under bright lights in the cold. It’s definitely challenging.”

Thankfully for the series’ ardent followers, the latest episode ‘Rose’ delivers several tender moments between Ilya and Shane. The actors are also aware of the curiosity surrounding their real-life sexual orientations, a topic Williams describes as “just part of being a public figure.”

Williams expressed, “I always knew that if I were to become a public figure, I’d crave a certain amount of privacy. Certainly, I support the idea of LGBTQ individuals telling their own stories. That said, Connor and I are close, and it’s natural for us to show that affection physically.”

For Storrie, the intense public scrutiny necessitates a degree of separation from his character, “With all this attention, it’s crucial for me to maintain some personal space from my role,” he explained.

The series, crafted by Jacob Tierney and inspired by Rachel Reid’s Game Changers novels, follows the secret romance between Ilya and Shane, unfolding over several years as they clandestinely meet during their games.

In ‘Rose’, now streaming, Ilya and Shane’s usually covert encounters move to Ilya’s lavish home. The episode captures a tender moment of post-encounter intimacy involving cuddling and sharing tuna melts, though Shane quickly leaves when the situation feels too intense, leading him into a new romance with famed actress Rose Landry, played by Sophie Nélisse.

The article then delves into the actors’ experiences with fan interactions at a recent event, their personal takes on filming various scenes, and the broader impact of the show’s unapologetically queer narrative amidst a backdrop of decreasing LGBTQ representation on TV.

Both Storrie and Williams discuss the significance of their roles and the series to the LGBTQ community, emphasizing the importance of authentic representation and the personal connections they’ve formed through their portrayals.
