Who Murdered These Young Women?
Billboards featuring the faces of Amy Ayers, sisters Jennifer Harbison and Sarah Harbison, and Eliza Thomas, posed a haunting question across Austin, Texas. They sought information on the chilling 1991 murders that occurred in a local yogurt shop. The concluding chapter of HBO’s four-part series The Yogurt Shop Murders dives deep into the persistent sorrow surrounding the case as investigators continue to search for answers, more than thirty years later.
Throughout the series, director Margaret Brown explores the complex details of this 34-year-old unresolved case and places significant emphasis on the deep, lasting trauma experienced by the victims’ families who are still grappling with their profound loss. Brown aims to shed light on how people cope with trauma and the complex nature of memory.
Achieving this goal meant conducting thorough interviews with those most affected by the tragedy: the family members of Amy, Jennifer, Sarah, and Eliza.

“Understanding triggers was challenging because different things affected each person in unique ways. You think you might predict it, but you really can’t,” Brown reflected. She learned through the process that grief manifests uniquely in each individual.

As Brown navigated through the discomfort, she realized the importance of maintaining sincere intentions throughout the process.
“You proceed despite the risks. Missteps happen, and when they do, I simply apologize and clarify my intentions, which usually helps to ease the situation,” she explained.
When it came to involving the families in the documentary, Brown was particularly cautious, especially with Barbara Ayres-Wilson, the mother of Jennifer and Sarah Harbison. Despite Ayres-Wilson’s reluctance due to past experiences with the media, Brown managed to earn her participation, though she approached her with great sensitivity.
The complexities of the case have left these families with deep wounds. Over the years, promising leads have repeatedly led to dead ends. A significant twist came a decade after the murders when two men were imprisoned for the crimes, only to be freed in 2009 after their convictions were overturned.
Austin Detective Dan Jackson, dedicated to the case, consistently updates the families, ensuring them that the investigation is active. “I work on this case nearly every day,” Jackson shared with Deadline. He remains as transparent as possible, sharing what he can without compromising the investigation.
Among the ongoing efforts, a small DNA sample from a victim holds potential. This evidence, which helped overturn previous convictions, remains key to unlocking the case.
Advancements in DNA technology could soon allow for a more detailed profile from the minimal DNA available, a feat unthinkable at the time of the murders.
“The DNA quantities required today are minuscule compared to a few years ago,” Jackson said, expressing cautious optimism about the possibilities.
The documentary also highlights the foresight of early detectives who insisted on swabbing the victims for DNA before moving the bodies, a decision that preserved critical evidence.
Brown added, “The fact that they stayed to collect DNA samples was crucial. Without that, we would have nothing today.”
Despite the challenges and the time that has passed, there is still hope and determination to uncover more in the Yogurt Shop investigation.
“We have made significant progress, and there’s still work to be done,” Jackson concluded optimistically.
