As a food critic for a monthly publication, I typically spend a lot of my year sampling lavish dishes, but the colder months tend to be less hectic. This downtime provides me an opportunity to focus on wholesome eating and choosing foods that satisfy my cravings without the pressure of having to review them. I find myself gravitating towards simple yet tasty foods.
Every evening that I’m not dining out for an assignment, I treat myself to a modest dessert of Walmart’s Great Value Greek yogurt. It costs under $3 for a 32-ounce container which lasts me over a week. I’ve discovered a little trick to make this budget-friendly yogurt feel like an indulgent treat: I add a spoonful of Nutella. When whipped in, the yogurt transforms into something reminiscent of chocolate mousse—sweet, delightful, yet still nutritious.
There are times when only chocolate will do, particularly with a hint of hazelnut. Initially, I began enhancing my yogurt with dark cocoa powder and honey, which made it decadently chocolatey. However, the Nutella jar in my cupboard seemed too tempting one day. It promised a richer, tastier dessert. Gradually, this combination became my preferred way to reward myself after a long day.
Transforming Yogurt with Nutella
I prefer my yogurt slightly warmed to room temperature rather than cold straight from the refrigerator, so I usually take it out as I’m finishing up with dinner. I scoop three heaping tablespoons of yogurt into a bowl and let it sit out for a bit.
Post-dinner, I add a tablespoon of Nutella to the yogurt. Initially, I tried whipping it with a whisk to achieve a light, airy texture, but I discovered that mixing it with a fork gives me a slightly denser, more satisfying texture that I prefer.
To add even more richness, I sometimes mix in a tablespoon of chia seeds. These seeds absorb moisture from the yogurt, transitioning from crunchy to a smooth, gel-like consistency. I add them right after taking the yogurt out of the fridge so they have time to swell up.
I absolutely love adding berries to my Nutella-yogurt mix. Topping it with raspberries or blueberries adds a fresh, juicy burst that contrasts wonderfully with the creamy, chocolatey base. The combination of textures and flavors makes each spoonful a delightful experience.
Now, whenever I reach for the yogurt, I know that just one simple addition will elevate it from plain to extraordinary.
