As the government shutdown hits day six, Jon Stewart, the host of The Daily Show, backs the Democrats for resisting Senate pressures.
Stewart sarcastically exclaimed, “What monsters! They seem unwilling to let people suffer from largely preventable illnesses. I’m curious to hear how this seemingly logical and modest demand will be twisted by the Fox-o-meter.”
On Fox Business, Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) criticized the proposals, which involve prolonging Obamacare benefits and cancelling cuts to Medicaid, labeling them as “healthcare for illegal immigrants, transgender surgeries.” Stewart criticized this portrayal, commenting that the transgender community shouldn’t be casually tossed into every conservative talking point as if they’re some kind of trendy accessory.
Stewart outlined President Donald Trump’s threats to slash programs important to Democrats, terminate more federal jobs, and possibly deploy the National Guard selectively in Democrat-led areas, saying, “So, the scheme is, if Democrats cause a government shutdown, Trump seizes the chance to cut programs dear to Democrats, or perhaps Trump might fire federal employees, or perhaps Trump might cut funds, but only in Democrat states, or Trump might just send in the National Guard, but only to Democrat-controlled zones. Essentially, to carry on with all this chaos, Trump doesn’t need any real reason, pretext, or provocation—he’s been doing it already for what feels like an eternity.”

Stewart then responded to a statement from House Speaker Mike Johnson, who claimed the President “takes no pleasure” in the shutdown.
“The President finds no joy in this? The President finds joy only in this,” Stewart asserted. “Considering the President’s condition, this might be the only thing that excites him. Remember, his famous line is, ‘You’re fired.’ Revenge seems to be his morning motivator.”
The comedian continued, taking a shot at ICE: “Suddenly, a modest request to protect people’s health becomes a radical act. It seems Republicans won’t be content until they dominate completely. ICE has shifted from deporting the most dangerous criminals to tossing grandmothers onto floors and binding American kids with zip ties, and we’re all supposed to just accept this new, overly armed, masked paramilitary force.”
He mentioned an incident involving Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who was blocked from entering an Illinois facility to use the restroom: “And Democrats are left with petty acts of bathroom defiance.”
Stewart concluded, “I’ve been harshly critical of Democrats for their weak leadership: Their lack of clear, actionable strategies, their dreadful messaging, their terrible puns. Did I mention their weak leadership? But right now, defending 75 million Americans and advocating for them to incur slightly less medical debt is the very least they ought to be doing.”
