This past Saturday, the Houston Cougars achieved one of the most astounding victories you could imagine. They defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 92-86 in a thrilling game that extended into two overtimes, capped by a stunning rally in the dying moments of the initial overtime.
With just 18.3 seconds remaining in the first overtime, Kansas was ahead by six points. The Jayhawks’ guard Dajuan Harris Jr. was at the free-throw line with a chance to seal the win. However, he missed both attempts, and the second miss was rebounded by Houston’s Joseph Tugler, who quickly initiated a fast break.
Emanuel Sharp then sank a crucial, heavily contested three-pointer with just 7.5 seconds left, reducing the Cougars’ deficit to three points. Attempting to respond, Kansas faced difficulties inbounding the ball and had to call a timeout. When play resumed, Houston’s intense defensive pressure caused Kansas’ Zeke Mayo to mishandle a pass, which was intercepted by Houston’s Mylik Wilson. Wilson made a game-tying three-pointer with only 4.3 seconds on the clock, pushing the game into a second overtime.

I haven’t seen anyone clip the entire sequence, from missed FTs all the way to 79-79. Maybe the most unexpected 14 seconds of the season. https://t.co/NCC1NFYq6B pic.twitter.com/L58dIFO3sz

Statisticians Jared Berson and KenPom calculated that Houston had only a 0.4% chance of overcoming Kansas with such a deficit in the final seconds of the first overtime. Similarly, ESPN’s win probability model also gave the Jayhawks a 99% chance of securing a victory at that juncture.
In the second overtime, Houston quickly gained the upper hand and maintained their lead, eventually clinching the game with a 92-86 score. Berson noted on X that this victory was the most improbable among AP Top-25 teams in the past 15 seasons.
The seventh-ranked Cougars triumphed over the twelfth-ranked Jayhawks in a remarkable display, improving their season record to 16-3 and remaining undefeated in Big 12 play. On the other hand, Kansas fell to 14-5 and looked ahead to their next game against UCF to rebound from this defeat.
