In 2025, the NFL plans to introduce significant updates to their replay assist process following criticisms of referees favoring Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes with excessive calls.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that NFL replay assist will be expanded next season to include plays involving quarterback slides.
For those upset about Patrick Mahomes getting too many calls, changes are coming soon.

“The NFL’s competition committee usually meets during the offseason before deciding on rule changes at the league’s March meeting…” Schefter noted on ESPN.com. “This year, the committee will look into expanding replay assist to potentially include quarterback slides.”
He added: “The consensus in the league is that it makes sense to add more clarity and fairness to the plays that are clearly visible to everyone watching.”
Schefter also shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the following play could come under review from next season:

In a recent game against the Houston Texans, Mahomes benefitted from two dubious roughing penalties and even attempted to draw a third by exaggerating a fall:
“The only instance I might have overdone it was during a play near the sideline where I didn’t receive a penalty,” Mahomes reflected on Wednesday. “The official saw it and opted not to throw the flag. I immediately understood the decision and realized it was probably excessive.”
The Chiefs are scheduled to face the Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City for the AFC championship game this Sunday, with kick-off at 6:30 p.m. EST.
It remains to be seen whether the referees will limit their use of yellow flags in this crucial match.
