WARNING: This post includes spoilers from the recent episode of NBC’s Brilliant Minds.
In a moving episode of NBC’s Brilliant Minds, actor Eric Dane delivered a poignant performance as a firefighter battling ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).
The special Thanksgiving installment aired four months after Dane, aged 53, publicly disclosed his own ALS diagnosis in April. His character, Matthew, decides to keep his illness a secret from his family. Throughout the episode, the medical team at Bronx General convinces him of the benefits of relying on his loved ones during such a challenging time.
Michael Grassi, the showrunner, shared with Deadline that the plot originated from a call from Dane’s representatives, indicating his admiration for the series and his desire to participate.

“Collaborating on this story with Eric, especially under his current circumstances, was truly exhilarating,” Grassi expressed. He added that their initial discussion happened via Zoom from a relative’s home, who was facing a tough diagnosis, which deeply influenced their conversation about family dynamics in dealing with severe health challenges.
This week’s episode not only focuses on Matthew’s journey but also touches on broader themes of seeking support and confronting mortality, as seen through other characters like Wolf (played by Zachary Quinto) and Ericka (Ashleigh LaThrop), who assists Sam (Nabil Rajo) in his critical health struggle.
Below, Grassi elaborates on the episode’s development and themes.
DEADLINE: This episode is particularly resonant given Eric’s real-life health struggles. Can you talk about how this storyline evolved and Eric’s involvement?
MICHAEL GRASSI: It all started when Eric’s team contacted us in September, expressing his interest in our show. Immediately, I was thrilled by the prospect of working with him. Our initial conversations revolved around the complexities families face when dealing with a diagnosis. There’s no playbook for these situations. We aimed to depict the strength of familial bonds and the difficulty of accepting help, especially for someone like Matthew, who has spent his life saving others. While the story is specific to ALS, it also has universal elements that speak to adaptation and the relentless nature of the disease.
DEADLINE: What insights did Eric bring to his character that reflected his personal experience with ALS?
GRASSI: From the start, Eric and I agreed we wanted to tell a story beyond just a diagnosis. We focused on portraying a person who already knows his condition and interacts freely within the hospital, which acts as his safe space. It was crucial for us to be authentic and adapt to daily changes that come with a progressive illness like ALS.
DEADLINE: How did you integrate this episode’s theme of dependency and support with the ongoing character arcs?
GRASSI: Once Eric joined the cast, we envisioned this Thanksgiving episode as a perfect backdrop to explore themes of family and reliance. Whether it’s Matthew, Sam, or Wolf, each character learns the importance of accepting help. This notion of interdependency felt particularly fitting and resonant for the episode.
DEADLINE: How does confronting unfixable situations impact the characters, particularly Wolf’s interns?
GRASSI: This challenge is central to the show’s premise, influenced by neurologist Oliver Sacks. Many neurological conditions don’t have straightforward solutions, and dealing with this reality involves significant adaptation and resilience. Our aim is to show how characters cope with these realities and adjust to their new normals.
DEADLINE: Mädchen Amick appears this episode as Matthew’s wife. How did her casting come about?
GRASSI: Having previously worked with Mädchen on Riverdale, I invited her to join us for this episode. She brought depth to the role and beautifully portrayed the complex dynamics within Matthew’s family.
DEADLINE: The episode concludes with a profoundly moving scene. Can you discuss its significance?
GRASSI: The closing scene, featuring the community’s support for Matthew, was emotionally charged and highlighted the collective respect and gratitude for his life’s work. It was a fitting tribute that resonated with everyone on set.
Brilliant Minds airs Monday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
