The beloved ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy mourns the loss of Eric Dane, a key member of its cast, who passed away on February 19 at the age of 53 after a fight with ALS.
The show is set to honor him in an upcoming episode that airs next week, following a brief hiatus.
Dane first appeared in Season 2 as a guest star and was promoted to a regular cast member by Season 3, portraying the much-loved Mark Sloan, also known as “McSteamy.” His character, along with Chyler Leigh’s Lexie Grey, met a tragic end due to a plane crash in the Season 8 finale. Their legacy continues as Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital was renamed Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in their honor.
Kim Raver, a fellow long-standing cast member who worked alongside Dane for three seasons, shared her memories of him on Instagram.

Raver wrote, “Eric was a beacon of light. Whether on set or with his family, you could see his brilliance. On set, his eyes would sparkle mischievously right before delivering a perfectly timed comedic line that left everyone in stitches. He will be deeply missed.”
Kevin McKidd, another veteran of Grey’s Anatomy who starred alongside Dane for four seasons, posted a heartfelt farewell on social media with a photo of Dane, captioning it, “Rest In Peace Buddy…”
Jeremy Pickens Jr., an original cast member present through Dane’s entire stint on the show, also paid tribute with a heartfelt “Rest In Peace” message alongside a commemorative photo.
ABC and the show’s producer, 20th Television, expressed their condolences, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Eric Dane. His remarkable talent and indelible presence on Grey’s Anatomy have left an enduring impact on viewers worldwide. His bravery in his ALS battle was truly inspiring. Our thoughts are with his family, colleagues, and the countless fans who admired him.”
During the 2020-21 season, which was themed around the pandemic, Dane and Leigh reprised their roles in dream sequences that occurred while Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) was comatose due to COVID-19. Their characters played a pivotal role in encouraging Meredith to choose life, leading to her recovery from the coma.
In a poignant scene during Dane’s 2021 return to Grey’s Anatomy, his character Mark Sloan shared his yearnings from the afterlife, particularly missing his daughter Sofia and speaking to her often.
In a conversation with Deadline about his appearance, Dane, a father to two daughters himself, reflected on Mark’s ongoing connection with his daughter, noting, “Whether she hears me or not, there’s always someone watching over you.”
