Melanie Watson Dies: ‘Diff’rent Strokes’ Actress Was 57

Melanie Watson, remembered for her recurring guest appearance on Diff’rent Strokes, has passed away at the age of 57.

Her brother, Robert Watson, informed TMZ that she died last Friday in Colorado Springs after being hospitalized due to bleeding complications.

Melanie was born on July 20, 1968, in Dana Point, California. From birth, she lived with osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as brittle bone disease. This condition, characterized by a deficiency in collagen, left her prone to fractures and resulted in lower bone density.

Between 1981 and 1984, Watson portrayed Kathy Gordon on Diff’rent Strokes. The character, who used a wheelchair, was portrayed as cheerful and helped Arnold (played by Gary Coleman) accept his own physical limitations, specifically that he would not grow taller than five feet. Melanie appeared in four episodes spanning Seasons 3 to 6.

After stepping away from her acting career, Watson co-founded Train Rite, a nonprofit organization dedicated to training rescue dogs to serve as service animals. Since 2019, she also took on the role of CEO at Couiffie’s Ranch, a facility that enables individuals with disabilities to lead more autonomous lives.
