WARNING: This article includes spoilers from the Hacks Season 4 finale.
Jean Smart’s character, Deborah Vance, experiences intense highs and lows in the climactic Season 4 finale of Hacks, which premiered today on HBO Max.
Following the implosion of her late-night show aspirations, Deborah is shackled by a network non-compete clause detailed in Episode 10, titled “Heaven.” This clause bars her from performing stand-up comedy for 18 months. Ava (played by Hannah Einbinder) suggests she use this period to craft a new comedy routine. Instead, Deborah embarks on a mission to bypass this contractual restriction legally.
Feeling directionless for the first time, Deborah seeks out her ex-manager Marcus (Carl Clemons-Hopkins), attempting to persuade him to rejoin her team, though he’s now happily managing a solar panel material production plant.

Marty (Christopher McDonald) proposes that Deborah take an extended break at a Hawaiian resort he partly owns. Just when it seems she has accepted to take a leisurely break with Ava, Ava is shocked to find herself waking up in Singapore instead.
Deborah has cleverly negotiated a limited engagement at a casino in Singapore, performing through a translator to sidestep her contract’s stipulations. What starts as a brief stint turns into a residency, during which Deborah indulges in excessive partying. Meanwhile, Ava grows disillusioned.
A major altercation with Deborah leads to Ava being sent away. The next morning, Ava is bombarded with calls and messages informing her that TMZ has declared Deborah dead. Fortunately, it turns out to be a false alarm—a prematurely released obituary. This incident reignites Deborah’s motivation to return to the U.S. and take control of her narrative once more.
Just hours before the announcement of Hacks’ renewal for a fifth season, the show’s creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky shared insights via a Zoom call with Deadline. They discussed Deborah’s character development, the evolving relationship with Ava, and their vision for wrapping up the series. They also hinted at a potential spin-off featuring characters Jimmy and Kayla, and discussed their upcoming comedy project Kansas City Star with HBO.
DEADLINE: Hacks is set for a fifth season. Your thoughts?
JEN STATSKY: We’re thrilled and feel incredibly privileged to continue with the show.
LUCIA ANIELLO: Absolutely. Achieving five seasons in today’s TV landscape is rare, and we’re grateful for it.
PAUL W. DOWNS: It’s more uncommon than it should be.
DEADLINE: When do you expect to resume production?
DOWNS: Likely this fall. We’re currently deep into the writing process.
DEADLINE: Why end the season this way for Deborah and Ava?
DOWNS: It just felt like the natural conclusion. Episode 9, “A Slippery Slope,” is pivotal as Deborah sacrifices her dream job, a decision that took four seasons to build up to. This season finale represents significant growth for her character, putting someone else’s needs before her own ambitions.
DEADLINE: Were alternative storylines considered?
ANIELLO: Yes, various scenarios were explored, but ultimately, showing Deborah finding a loophole and creating her own space in Singapore felt right. It reflects her resilience and ability to adapt, which is central to her character.
In the context of her professional struggles, the idea of her death being falsely reported was intriguing since it forced her to confront her legacy and spurred her to change it while she still could.
DEADLINE: What’s next for Jimmy and Kayla, and what does the future hold for Hacks?
DOWNS: We’re exploring their evolving dynamic and considering a potential spin-off. We’re still passionate about these characters and their stories.
ANIELLO: We’re focused on Hacks right now, but we’re open to expanding the universe if there’s interest.
