Chicago Fire‘s Daniel Kyri is set to make a temporary comeback in the 14th season of the NBC drama.
This morning, Kyri shared a selfie on his Instagram Story featuring himself with Jocelyn Hudon and Hanako Greensmith, captioned: “Back! For a limited time only,” accompanied by a peace sign emoji. In a second behind-the-scenes photo, Kyri appears in full firefighter attire alongside cast members David Eigenberg, Christian Stolte, Miranda Rae Mayo, and series newcomer Brandon Larracuente.
NBC has not provided further details on this development. Deadline has contacted Kyri’s representatives for more information.
Watch on Deadline
As exclusively reported by us this past April, Kyri will be leaving the main show after Season 13, along with cast member Jake Lockett. Kyri, who has also appeared in related series Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med, initially joined the Wolf Entertainment series as the recurring character Darren Ritter. A respected firefighter, his recent storyline focused on his relationship with Officer Dwayne Monroe (Samuel B. Jackson).
Showrunner Andrew Newman, in a conversation with our sister site TVLine last May, mentioned that while there’s no concrete plan yet for handling Kyri’s exit, there are “lots of possibilities” for future story arcs, which include last season’s cliffhanger about potential layoffs within the fire department.
Newman noted, “We’re expecting significant changes and a fair bit of upheaval in the CFD, starting from the top, with cuts and reassignments, which will certainly shake things up next season.”
The departure of these actors is part of a strategy to reduce the budget of Chicago Fire, which is also dealing with contract renewals for many of its long-standing cast members. According to sources speaking to Deadline, the production, based in Chicago, has requested cast members establish residency in Illinois, with a likely reduction in the number of episodes otherwise. Additionally, some actors may need to skip their usual 5% annual salary increase as costs rise for aging series.
In May, NBC extended its trio of Chicago shows, renewing Chicago P.D. for a 13th season and Chicago Med for its 11th. The total orders for the 2025-26 seasons remain uncertain, but it’s possible we’ll see shorter seasons next year, a trend reflecting broader cost-saving measures across network television.
After many seasons, the One Chicago lineup continues to be among NBC’s top performers across traditional and digital platforms.
