While it remains uncertain if Dani Rojas will rejoin AFC Richmond for the upcoming season, Cristo Fernandez, famed for his role in Ted Lasso, is returning to professional soccer. He recently inked a deal with a professional club in Mexico.
After a two-month trial period, Fernandez successfully secured a spot with the USL Championship team Paso Locomotive. Earlier in the year, he also had a trial with the MLS team, Chicago Fire.
Fernandez, who is 35 years old, began his soccer career in Mexico when he was just 15. Unfortunately, an injury prematurely ended his playing career.
Subsequently, he relocated to London and landed a role in Ted Lasso, the Apple TV comedy-drama that stars Jason Sudeikis as an inexperienced American coaching a premier English soccer team.
“Soccer has always been a fundamental part of who I am, and despite the twists and turns my life has taken, the aspiration to play professionally has always persisted,” Fernandez expressed. “I am deeply thankful to El Paso Locomotive FC for welcoming me with open arms, and giving me the chance to prove myself from the very first day,” he added.

“The return to professional soccer is a testament to believing in oneself, embracing risks, and relentlessly pursuing your dreams, no matter how unpredictable the road may be. As the saying goes in Mexico: hay que seguirle echando ganas – we must keep pushing forward. I am eternally grateful to God, my family, and friends for their unwavering belief in me. Perhaps I’m just a dreamer with outlandish dreams… which makes being part of the Locos absolutely fitting. ¡Vamos Locos!” he shared enthusiastically.
In Ted Lasso, Fernandez portrays the effervescent and fervent Mexican forward Dani Rojas, appearing in all three seasons thus far. The fourth season began production last July, featuring stars like Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein.
With the plot pivoting to focus on a women’s team, it has been hinted that Fernandez, along with other male cast members like Phil Dunster, might make cameo appearances. The new season is set to premiere globally on August 5, with episodes releasing every Wednesday thereafter.
